(( Hunziker knew the three month ordeal was ending when the US Air Force jet roared away from North Korea's capital.
He looked healthy and his spirits were so good he turned the video camera on New Mexico Congressman Bill Richardson and the other men who negotiated his release.
The North Koreans - suddenly being nice - cleared the American jet to fly through restricted North Korean airspace and in short order the plane landed at a US air base near Tokyo.
Following the congressman out of the plane..he was clearly in good condition. Before heading for a routine check at a military hospital, he shared a victory salute with the congressman. By some reports..he slipped across a river into North Korea to bring his Christian beliefs to one of the world's last communist states.
Congressman Richardson admitted that money changed hands - about five thousand dollars - but paid, he said, to cover expenses for time Hunziker was held in a hotel. The Americans refused to pay a fine demanded by the North Koreans..and rejected accusations that Hunziker was a spy.

(SOT: CONGRESSMAN BILL RICHARDSON/NEW MEXICO)

I THINK HE IS A GOOD YOUNG MAN. HE IS 27 YEARS OLD. I DON'T BELIEVE SOME OF THE ALLEGATIONS THAT HE WAS INVOLVED IN ESPIONAGE AT ALL FOR ANYBODY. LET'S JUST SAY HE TRIED TO BE A TOURIST A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH.
ALL THIS WAS A FRIENDLY GESTURE TOWARD THE UNITED STATES. AND MAYBE MORE...THE FIRST SIGN THAT NORTH KOREA'S LONG AND DANGEROUS ISOLATION IS BEGINNING TO END.
