A car crash took the life of a Galax woman.
Police say 34- year- old- Vivian Lynn Nichols was driving down route 58 yesterday when she failed to stop at a stop sign and hit another vehicle.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some past and present Radford fire department sources say a firefighter's alleged drug use may have been a public safety concern for years.
Tommy Long was charged with driving under the influence of drugs last Thursday, after the fire engine he was driving hit a parked police car.
Tuesday he was fired.

Several sources who did not wish to be identified said Long's termination is overdue.
Fire chief Martin Roberts says there's only been one other incident in the three year's HE'S been chief.
He wrote Long a letter last Spring telling him to straighten up, or he'd be fired. He says there were no other problems until the accident last Thursday.
State police say Long admitted he had taken prescription medication, and that Roberts remarked at the accident scene that he could tell Long was quote "snockered."

The bodies of Jesse and Elizabeth Kendrick were discovered Tuesday morning inside their Springfield Road condominium.

A state medical examiner says they'd both been shot in the head.
The Kendricks' daughter was apparently in town for Thanksgiving and notified police after she could not get anyone to the door.
Authorities are following up on several leads but have not made an arrest.

Police have filed charges against three Bedford Middle School eighth-graders for possessing or distributing the prescription stimulant Ritalin.
Two 13- year- old boys face charges of Ritalin distribution and a 14- year- old faces a charge of Ritalin possession.
Police say the three, along with a fourth boy, also were suspended from school last week.
School officials say one of the boys had a prescription for the drug and brought it to school.
Authorities say the boys were planning to distribute the drug.

A prisoner who was raped by his cellmate does not have a claim against the warden of Augusta Correctional Center.
William Dixon said he was raped in May 1994, four nights after being assigned to share a cell with Johnny Turner.
The U-S Disrtict Judge said the warder should have known how dangerous Turner was and that the officer used "poor judgement" in cell assignments.
But he found that Saunders was not deliberately trying to risk Dixon and that's why the claim was rejected.

Roanoke's Mill Mountain star burned red last night after a death in a drunk driving related accident.
Donald Ray Fuller of Glade Hill died Sunday from injuries he suffered in an accident on November 15th.
Fuller was a passenger in a pickup truck when the vehicle he was riding in ran off the road on Route 40 in Franklin County.
State police say alcohol was involved in the accident.
