The embattled head football coach at Lord Botetourt High School has thrown in the towel.
Andy Ward submitted his resignation to the school board this morning, amid controversy over a driving record that includes two D-U-I convictions.

Scott Prince has been tracking the story.
And has the latest for us.
Scott, was this a surprise to members of the school board?

Keith, they wouldn't comment about the situation on a personal level.
But it took them only about 15 minutes to accept Ward's resignation.
Now, EARLIER in the morning... Ward began serving his jail time... but it appears that it wasn't early enough.

((Andy Ward was supposed to be at the Botetourt County jail at 9- o'clock this morning.
But he showed up an hour and twenty minutes late.... meaning he could face an additional charge of disobeying a court order.
Shortly after he got there... members of the school board held an emergency meeting.
They ended up going behind closed doors... but when they returned it was announced that Ward had in fact resigned.

Ward's troubles were brought to light Monday... when he was sentenced to 14 days in jail for speeding and driving on a suspended license.
His record also shows 2 separate DUI convictions.
Ward will spend this weekend behind bars... and will serve out the remainder of his jail time later this month.))

As Ward entered the jail this morning... we asked him if he would comment on his situation.
Double Boxes=Keith and Scott/Newsroom

He said, on the advice of his attorney, he'd better not.
(QUESTION: What about his tardy arrival at the jail? Is he in more trouble for

showing up late?)
Normally, in a case like this, the inmate is taken in front of a judge immediately.
But because of the holiday weekend... Ward will have to wait until Monday to see if he is in fact charged with disobeying a court order.

Ric Haggins fear is understandable.
Since the beginning of the week, three murders have happened in his neighborhood.
It all began Tuesday, when Jesse and Elizabeth Kendrick were found dead in their Cabin Creek Condominium.
Yesterday, a third victim was discovered inside a nearby apartment.
Police say 33- year old Archie Moore had been stuffed inside a closet.
Authorities won't confirm a connection, but the similarities are there.
Sources say all three victims were wrapped in a sheet.
And, state medical examiners have concluded, ALL three had been shot in the head. nat sound

Police have since stepped up patrols in the neighborhood.
And, they have made an arrest.
Late yesterday, an 18- year old, who lives in the same neighborhood, was charged with Capital murder.
At this point, Percy Levar Walton has been charged ONLY with killing Archie Moore.
In the meantime, police continue collecting evidence.
