Police have made an arrest in one of four shooting deaths this week in Danville.

Meantime officials continue to follow up on leads in connection with the Kendrick murders.
The elderly couple was shot to death inside their house during an apparent break- in.
One of the home's windows had been pried open... and the couple's vehicle had been stolen.
It was later found nearby.
At this point, no arrests have been made.

Lord Botetourt High school Andy ward begins serving a 14 day jail sentence today.

Ward was handed down the sentence Monday for speeding, and for driving with a license that was restricted because of two drunk driving charges.
Meantime, there is some uncertainty about the status of Ward.
The Roanoke Times quotes two school board members as saying Ward was suspended.

Board member Michael Beahm told News-7 yesterday that Board Chairman Jim
(RULE-LAND) Ruhland told HIM Ward was suspended as of Tuesday.


But Beahm says only Superintendent Robert Reece can actually confirm the action.

Jens Soering has contacted his former girlfriend in attempt to clear his name.
Last Thursday he wrote a letter to Elizabeth Haysom appealing to her to admit to the murder of her parents for which HE's serving a double life sentence.

Elizabeth Haysom is serving 90 years as an accomplice AFTER the fact to the crime.
Soering admitted killing her parents in 19-85, because he believed she wanted them dead.
A hearing is scheduled a week from Monday for Soering.
His his attorney will again argue that he accepted the blame only to cover up for her.

Many of those close to the case believe Elizabeth was present at her parent's home when they were stabbed to death.
They say the Haysoms would never have let Soering in their house because they despised him so much.

Police have arrested a man in connection with one of four recent shooting deaths in Danville.

18- year- old Percy Levar Walton of Danville is charged with killing 33- year- old Archie Moore.
Moore's body was discovered yesterday morning stuffed in a closet in his apartment.
Moore was discovered only a few hundred yards from the home of Jesse and Elizabeth Kendrick who were found fatally shot on Tuesday.
Police are not saying if the deaths are connected.

All of this construction hasn't been completed without controversy. The demolition of the old Stonewall Jackson Middle School angered some in southeast Roanoke.
But Harris says school officials have learned from each project... lessons that will help as they turn their attention to the city's high schools.

Whatever form the high school project takes, the work won't be complete for several years.
And Harris says the school system's greatest challenge may be getting citizens involved in planning that won't bear fruit before the year 2003.

In just three days Danville police have found themselves with four fatal shootings to investigate.

And Danville police are investigating a fourth fatal shooting.
Willie Troy Kernodle was found at his home on Ross Street early yesterday morning with gunshot wounds to the chest.
He was taken to Danville Regional Memorial Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have not released any more details on the case.

Hunting has taken a toll on two men in Franklin County.
Sheriff's deputies say Eric Reynolds accidentally shot Michael Turner in the stomach.
Turner underwent surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Reynolds was later charged with reckless handling of a firearm.
Authorities believe the accident might have been avoided had the victim been wearing blaze orange.

Virgil Goode's appointment to the Agriculture committee could be good news for Southside tobacco growers.

Goode was appointed to the House Committee on Agriculture.
He's replacing Fifth District Congressman L- F Payne who's retiring from Congress at the end of the year.
The agriculture committee has primary jurisdiction over specialty crops such as tobacco and peanuts.
The majority of Virginia's tobacco is grown in the Fifth District.
The committee also oversees the dairy, livestock and poultry programs as well as programs such as food stamps.
