It's one of Britain's worst food poisoning epidemic. With scores
infected and several people in critical condition ,dgtorw warn
there may be!further!deaths.
The outbreak was traced to cooked meat and pies from an award-
winning Scottish butgier, who supplies meat prducts thrwghout
Scotland. The shop has been closed and goods pulled off the
shelves, but Scottish people want to know why it took almost a
week for health authorities to warn of the danger -- time which
gave the virus a chance to spread.
THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD A WEEK AOO DEFINITELY, IT'S RIDICULOUS SCANDALOUS".
The British government has ordered an investigation into the
epidemic of the so-called hamburger bug -- a strain of the
E.Colu bacteria spread primarily by eating contaminated, under-
cooked beef.
The bacteria forms a toxin that attacks red blood
cells.
It's especially dangerous for the very young, and the very
old.
Doctors say there should be fewer new cases, now that the
source of infection has been shut down.
SIR DAVID CARTER, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, SCOTLAND
"WE HOPE THAT THE PEAK IS OVER AND THAT THE NUMBER OF CASES
COMING FORWARD WILL NOW DIMINISH."
But the bacteria also spreads from person to person.
Some doctors
say as many as twenty people a day could unwittingly become infected, meaning
Scotland's burger bug problems may be far from
over.
