The Tour Dupont-- which pedaled its way through our region, will no longer
bear the DuPont name-- in fact, the entire tour may now be in jeopardy.
Good Evening, you're watching NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
The annual bike race that passes through central and southwest Virginia has
been called "publicity money can't buy."
But with Dupont, the main sponsor, pulling out, it could be pulling the plug
on the entire event.
DuPont has been involved in what's been considered America's premier cycling
event for eight years.
The company had said that 1997 would be its last year.
But now DuPont says it's pulling out as of today because of UNmet
Dupont blames a lawsuit between the event's owners, which has put planning
for the race six months behind.
Over the years, the Tour Dupont has made stops in Roanoke, Blacksburg,
Lynchburg and dozens of communities in between.
Local cycling enthusiast Brian Duncan tells NEWS-7 with Dupont pulling out,
there's not much time to raise money.
Duncan says it's doubtful there will be a race next year, but he believes
it would return in 1998.

Loved ones today remembered the 15 TWA victims who were never found.

15 out of the 230 people aboard Flight 800, were never recovered from the
Atlantic Ocean, after the plane crashed off Long Island.
Amherst County authorities say a body found along Route 617 today MAY be the
driver of a car found abandoned in Lynchburg yesterday.
The body of 24- year- old Vincent Lee (SKUL-ter-brant) Schulterbrandt was
discovered by a highway worker around 2:30.
He'd been shot once in the head.. police believe he was killed somewhere
else and left alongside that road.
Sheriff Jimmy Ayers says the victim matches the description of a man who'd
been driving a Nissan Pathfinder found in Lynchburg.
The passenger seat of that car was covered with blood.
The car had New York plates, and Schulterbrandt is a Bronx resident.
Tomorrow morning, the regional homicide squad will take over the case.
