A mobile home fire takes the life of a Pittsylvania County teenager.

Good Evening, this is News 7 Primetime on WEFC.
I'm Connie Stevens.
An electrical short appears to be the cause of the blaze that killed
17-year old Alexander Ferrell.
Sheriff's officials say Ferrell's father had already left for work when his
mother noticed smoke.
Ferrell's mother wasn't injured, but her son did not make it out.
The mobile home is located on Beaver Street, off Route 360- in the Blairs
Foul play is NOT suspected.
An autopsy will be performed in Roanoke.
Daredevil Robbie Knievel didn't jump at the opportunity to appear in a
Roanoke courtroom this morning
He faced a drunk in public charge.

In October, Knievel was arrested after he went around banging on doors in a
Northwest Roanoke neighborhood.
The incident happened the night before a scheduled performance at the civic
center... which was ultimately cancelled.
His attorney said there was never any proof that Knievel had been drinking
at the time.

Altizer said Knievel has made one jump since being arrested.
He's currently in Las Vegas for a trade show.
A Craig County doctor stopped a group of four teenagers in September because
he thought they were driving erratically.
Following the stop, the driver swore out warrants against the doctor;
William Andersen filed a cross warrant.
Before the case was called in court, Doctor Andersen offered to apologize to
the boys and their families, if they'd drop the charges.
In the end Judge Buzz Emick dismissed the claim that Andersen had pretended
to be a police officer, and found him guilty of brandishing a pistol.
Andersen said the next time he'd leave his gun in the truck.

The fact that Greenspan mentioned the words "irrational exuberance" while
talking about the U-S economy last night, signaled to investors that Greenspan
thinks the markets are over-valued.
Some say that a slow decline in the market now might prevent a future stock
That's leading some to wonder whether Greenspan's comments were actually
purposeful, and not so off-the-cuff.

When we return,
We'll head to downtown Roanoke for the annual holiday tree lighting.
This year's tree has close to a thousand lights.
But first, it's called the silent killer.
Some advice on protecting your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.
go to break
You can't see it, smell it or taste it....that's why carbon monoxide is
known as the silent killer.
Each year it kills up to 15-hundred people, and injures some 10-thousand.
The deadly gas essentially prevents oxygen from entering the blood stream.
This week, the fumes claimed the lives of an elderly Halifax County couple.
Authorities say Isaac and Annie Garner died when their gas heater
Experts say what happened to the Garners could happen to anyone who burns
fuel or wood in their home.
Tom Cahill of Danville is a carbon monoxide survivor-- who credits his cats
for saving his life.
The animals apparently got sick from breathing the gas.
When Cahill got up to check on them-- he noticed he was dizzy.

OUT Q=carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide entered Cahill's home after several dead birds blocked the
exhaust from his furnace into the chimney.
Experts say families should invest in a carbon monoxide detector and have
their furnace and chimney regularly serviced.
The second phase of a federal law takes affect today-- which is aimed at
protecting people from the hazards of lead poisoning.
The new law strives to protect young children.
It mandates that owners of homes built before 1978 must let potential
buyers or renters know if the house contains lead-based paint....or the owners
could be held liable.
Studies show that children under six are at highest risk for developing
brain damage or developmental problems as a result of lead poisoning.
But here's the catch.
The new law is only a disclosure law.
IN Q=In this case
((NANCY KENNEDY/REAL ESTATE AGENT: KNOWLEDGE IN THIS CASE EQUALS TESTING. IF
YOU HAVEN'T HAD A TEST MOST LIKELY YOU'LL INDICATE YOU DON'T KNOW OF ANY

If you live in a home built before 1978, chances are lead based paint was
used somewhere in the house-- but that doesn't necessarily mean it's dangerous.

OUT Q=sanding it down.
From now on, lead poisoning information will be part of the contract when
you buy an older home-- and real estate agents must hand out a pamphlet on the
dangers of lead.
Also, lead paint will probably be added to the list of inspections you get
before purchasing a home.
