The simple logistics involved in admitting women is overwhelming.
Dorms need to be modified and of course there is still the issue of whether women should be required to shave their heads.
General Josiah Bunting says he and his staff are doing their own recognizance work by visiting other service academies.
Bunting says VMI may have a difficult time recruiting top female candidates away from these schools because of their national prominence and the military benefits they offer.
He says the Air Force Academy has been admitting women for 20 years and women make up just 9 percent of enrollment.
Bunting says they are doing their best to attract women at VMI. nat sound
Earlier this week, a federal judge ordered VMI to provide quarterly reports outlining their progress.
The Justice Department had wanted VMI to submit a formal plan.

The state's Democratic party has decided to stick with using a convention to nominate its candidates for the '97 election.
That was decided at today's central committee meeting.
The party will choose its nominees for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general May eighth through the tenth in Richmond.
Some Democrats had pushed for a primary instead of a convention.
Former state chairman Paul Goldman says a primary would involve more voters.
However, the idea was never mentioned at today's meeting.

(( Victory stadium served as a neutral site, but there was never any question as to who was the home team in this battle.
Salem also did a better job of neutralizing the rain and mud in the first half by forcing three Sherando turnovers, still the Spartans trailed with 3 minutes left in the half.
But R.J. Beckwith took care of that with this strike over the middle to John Hancock giving Salem a 7-to-6 lead at halftime. ((R.J. BECKWITH:)) ((JOHN HANCOCK:))
The Spartans were the recipients of 2 good omens to start the third quarter, first - Paul Jackson rips off a huge gain right of the middle, but the Sherando tacklers rips the ball loose - finally the Salem would recover.
A couple of minutes later the sun came out and Hancock went back in the zone, hauling in another Beckwith toss over the middle to make it 14-to-6 Salem with 7:21 left in the third.
But this one was far from finished - as Sherando comes back and moves the ball down inside the Salem 10.
But the Spartans defense would throw down a goal line stand of the ages stopping the Warriors on 2 straight downs from the one to preserve their lead. ((RICKY EUBANK:))
The unselfish Spartans then unleased freshman Denis Haley up the middle, and his 20 yard gallop seemed to out the game away making it 20-to-6 with 7:20 to go.
But on another fourth and goal Kelly Washington finds Brad Payton for the short TD chopping the lead to 20-to-12.
But there would be no last second comeback on this day! Jamie Garst seals the deal with the interception, and Salem proves that the third time is the charm beating Sherando 20-to-12 for the Division 4 state crown. ((MIKE STEVENS:)) ((WILLIS WHITE:))
