It's Monday December Ninth- Our Top Story
Six years ago Jens Soering was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's
parents, today he asked for a new trial.
Good Evening, this is NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
The German diplomat's son claims he will be cleared of the murders that
occured eleven years ago.
Soering says the prosecution withheld evidence during his first trial in
1990, for the slayings of Derek and Nancy Haysom.
They were found in their Boonsboro home in April of 1985.
Each had been stabbed several times and had their throats cut.
Today, former Bedford County Deputy George Anderson testified he picked up
two drifters a few days after the murders, and one of them reportedly left a
knife in his patrol car.
Experts say the knife could have been used to commit the Haysom murders.
The drifters later were arrested for the stabbing death of a homeless man in
Soering's attorney says all this evidence might have swayed that 1990 jury
in her client's favor had they heard it.
The question of whether investigators withheld exculpatory evidence was the
focus of today's court hearing.
Both sides will wrap up their arguments tomorrow.
Judge William Sweeney is "not" expected to rule on Soering's request for a
new trial for several days.
The Plaintiffs have rested in their lawsuit against O.J. Simpson, the man
they believe killed Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.
Today, it was Fred Goldman's turn to speak out-- about the anguish his
24-year-old son's death has caused.
Goldman was the Plaintiff's 66th and last witness-- his testimony was
intended to help jurors decide how much money the murders should cost Simpson,
should the football hero be found liable.

A life-saving surgery for some heart patients will soon be more available
Cardiac surgeons from the top ten heart centers in the country started
classes today on the new technique.
SUPER=03-Washington DC; :
It's called "Minimally-invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass"-- that's
Mid-Cab, for short-- and it is less invasive than standard bypass surgery.
Bypasses are performed to get around blockages in the coronary arteries and
restore blood flow to the heart muscle.
But with this new procedure, instead of opening the chest, the surgeon
makes a much smaller incision in the patient's side....and there's no need to
be hooked to a heart-lung machine, as is the case with the standard operation.
Instead, the heart continues to beat on its own throughout the procedure.
