It could be a few months before a Bedford County judge decides whether to
give convicted killer (Yens Sir-ing) Jens Soering a new trial.
At issue is whether prosecutors withheld evidence that might have cleared
Soering of the murders of his girlfriend's parents.

(( It's been eleven years since Derek and Nancy Haysom were stabbed to death in
their Boonsboro home, six years since former U-V-A student Jens Soering was
convicted of the crime.
Soering's new attorney claims two men who killed a Roanoke vagrant in 1985
could have murdered the Haysoms as well.
The problem is, that information was never given to Soering's defense
counsel, who might have used it to his advantage at trial.

But the defense says Soering deserves a new trial, back in the same court
where he spent a long three weeks in the summer of 1990.

months before he'll know if he'll get a new trial. Soering's attorney has been
given sixty days to determine whether fingerprints at the Haysom crime scene
match those of Robert Albright or William Shifflett. After that, written
briefs will be filed with the court, but a decision from Judge William Sweeney

Roanoke's School Superintendent has recommended a teacher pay raise for the
next academic year.
But members of the Roanoke Education Association say it's still not enough.

enough for their labor.
The Roanoke Education Association president requested the school board up
the ante of teacher salaries by six percent next year.

That budget is based on a projected revenue increase of two- point- nine
Harris says the figure still keeps city teachers on track to reach the
national average the following school year.

One side note, the board announced its unanimous approval of a new four-
year contract for Superintendent Harris.
Convicted murderer Larry Stout was executed by lethal injection in the
state's death chamber tonight.
Stout was convicted of the 1987 robbery and murder of a Staunton store
He was the sixth person executed this year in Virginia and the second of
five scheduled for this month.
What if a repeat sex offender says he'll attack again but he's done serving
his prison time?
Should he go free or be locked up in a mental institution?

time he was released from prison, he molested again, convicted five times
over forty years.

There are six states, including Kansas, with similar predator statutes
requiring continued confinement, but this is the first one to make it to the
high court, a test case that could guide the rest of the nation.

spent much of the day today telling his story to the jury.
Chris Benson was the final witness in his ten-million dollar libel case
Benson sued the station over stories Channel 10 broadcast last year.
One of them featured a woman who says she worked at Puppyland six or seven
Andrea Litvak described animal abuse at the hands of Chris Benson.
She told a similar story today, under oath.

A 15 year-old boy testified today he heard James Reid say he wanted to kill
