Good evening,
I'm Len Besthoff, filling in for Eric Earnhart
Dozens of injuries, but so far no confirmed fatalities after a freighter
smashed into a dockside shopping mall in New Orleans.
A grain freighter lost power and rammed the Riverwalk this afternoon.
Panicked holiday shoppers leapt into the Mississippi River and trampled each
other in the rush to escape.
The freighter was able to sound its horn for about three minutes
before the collision.
The executive director of port of New Orleans says rescue workers will
search overnight for survivors and possible victims.

(( The crew set off their warning signals...but for some it was too late.
The Liberian-registered Bright Field collided into the Riverwalk complex
sending two shopping levels into the Mississippi River on this afternoon.
The shops and walkway were busy with holiday shoppers when the boat came out
of the river and hit the sidewalk.
Rescue workers hustled to bring the injured to local hospitals.
The Coast Guard is using infrared cameras to locate other victims that might
be trapped in the wreckage.
Buildings in the upscale shopping area collapsed and appeared
unstable...which could hinder rescue efforts.
Officials don't know yet why the accident happened.
But initial reports were the freighter lost power or ship's anchor
dropped...throwing it off course.
The ship is now tied up and several tugboats are helping keep it steady.
