On Tuesday, voters will decide who will fill Virgil Goode's vacant seat.
If voters pick Roscoe Reynolds, the chamber will have an equal number of
Democrats and Republicans, with Democratic Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer
holding the tie- breaking vote.
If voters choose Allen Dudley, the Senate will have a Republican majority
for the first time in the Commonwealth's history.
Denise Allen reports on the candidates' last minute efforts to get an edge
in what many call a tight race.

Pope John Paul's mercy request for a Virginia death row inmate has been sent
on to President Clinton.
The Vatican says the pope had sent a message to the papal representative in
Washington, asking him to intercede on behalf of Joseph O'Dell.
O'Dell is scheduled to die by electrocution on Wednesday.
Papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls says the request was also passed on to
Governor George Allen.
O'Dell was convicted of raping and murdering a woman in 1985.
Since his arrest, O'Dell has maintained his innocence.
An innocent plea for a drifter accused in a multi-state crime spree that
left women dead in Tennessee and Virginia.
28-year old Bradley D. Osborne entered the plea yesterday.
He'll be tried on charges in Tennessee first before coming to Virginia.
The public defender there says he needs time to prepare a possible defense
of alcohol use and mental instability.

furniture for Marriott International.
The president of American says this represents a major endorsement of the

The University of Virginia is losing its Offensive coordinator Tom O'Brien
to the Big East.
O'Brien has been named the new head coach at Boston College he was
introduced at a press conference this morning.
O'Brien is in his sixth season as offensive coordinator at Virginia. He's
been with Head Coach George Welsh for the past 21 years first at Navy and at
U-V-A has finished among the top three teams in the A-C-C in scoring
offense the last seven season.
O'Brien will succeed Dan Henning as the Eagles head coach.
Ty Detmer threw two touchdown passes in the second half to lead the
Philadelphia Eagles to a 21 to 20 win over the New York Jets.
