his troubled program this morning.

- especially when it comes to reevaluating whether or not to reinstate the
handful of players who are still on suspension.

Beginning in January, all Tech athletes will be required to participate in a
sexual assault and awareness program.
Project SAFE, as it's called, has actually been in the development stages
since last year, long before this week's rape charges against Crawford and
Tracy Altizer reports.

(( It was LAST December when Christy Brzonkala went public with her charges
of rape against Tech football players Tony Morrison and James Crawford.
The criminal charges were dismissed.
But Tech officials decided the case reflected a need to better educate all
students about sexual assault.
Athletic Director Dave Braine says Project SAFE, Sexual Assault Facts and
Education, accomplishes and even exceeds that goal.

Over the course of four two- hour seminars, the program tries to get at the
roots of sexual assault with discussions on topics such as self-esteem and
communication between partners.

The cost of heating your home may start burning a hole in your wallet.
Roanoke Gas customers can expect to find a 20 to 25 percent increase in
their natural gas bills.
But similar problems are affecting the entire home- heating industry.
Fuel oil customers will see a 10- percent increase over last year... and a
14- percent rate hike as compared to this summer.
Some distributors say, however, there's reason for optimism.

Some local analysts say prices on fuel oil and natural gas could go down as
early as February.

The federal jury in Roanoke concluded Flynt had intentionally inflicted
"emotional distress" on Falwell by publishing a parody of a liquor ad,
suggesting Falwell was a drunk whose sexual initiation took place in an
outhouse with his mother.

The Supreme Court eventually overturned the trial court's decision. Falwell
got nothing, but said today he enjoyed every minute of what he unapologetically

Roanoke is studying the possibility of turning over trash collection to

Former Roanoke Valley Rebel, Mike Keenan, got the rudest of Christmas gifts
today when he was fired by the St. Louis Blues.
Keenan was stripped of not only his head coaching duties, but also his
general manager's title.

Assistant Jimmy Rodgers was promoted to head coach.
An attorney will have his day in court as a defendant for attempting to
bribe NBA star Marcus Camby into choosing him as a sports agent.
Wesley Spears turned himself in today and faces charges of attempted larceny
by extortion and promoting prostitution because of a December incident
involving the Toronto Raptor center.
The charges claim that Spears, also a landlord, hired a female tenant to have
sex with Camby, and in return hire him as Camby's agent.
