The President chose the son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo for

Hostages in Lima Peru are requesting food and water.
375 people are still being held in the Japanese Ambassadors residence.
Today hostages held signs in the windows- asking for food and water.
The Red Cross has been sending in bottled water and other supplies.
Now 500 chicken dinners are making their way to the compound.
The hostages have been held since Tuesday night.
The guerillas are demanding their jailed commrades be freed, but local news
in Peru reports the govenment has tentatively decided not to meet the rebel

A Roanoke woman's sister was among those held hostage.
Cecilia Alami (Ah-la-may) says her sister and brother-in law were captured
while attending the ambassador's dinner.
Her sister, Stella was released yesterday morning unharmed but Stella's
husband is still being held captive.

But plaintiffs in the civil trial are attacking his qualifications.
Robert Groden today admitted he has no professional training examining
Simpson was expected to take the stand today- but he did not.
He is awaiting word in his battle for custody of his children, Sydney and
Justin. A decision in that case could come today.
Roanoke's chief prosecutor says a police officer's use of deadly force WAS
Two months ago, Officer A-C Lampe shot and killed 41-year old Rodney Lee
Wilhelm outside the man's home in southeast Roanoke.
Wilhelm was armed with two handguns when he confronted the officer, fired a
round into the pavement and pointed the other weapon at Lampe.
The officer opened fire and shot him four times.
Commonwealth's attorney Don Caldwell says Lampe had reason to believe his
life was in danger, and had the right to defend himself.
A 24-year old man convicted in Halifax County for his role in organized dog
fighting will serve 90-days in jail.
Anthony Martinez was also ordered to do one-thousand hours of community
service at an animal hospital.
Martinez and Alan Samuels were arrested earlier this year after a Halifax
County Deputy heard a dog moaning in the back of a truck parked outside a
Deputies found four injured dogs as well as a videotape of people wagering
thousands of dollars on dog fights.

The number of domestic-related calls to the Halifax County Sheriff's
department is steadily rising.
That's just one reason Sheriff Jeff Oakes is eager to put a new grant to

The money will be used to hire a full time deputy who'll receive extensive
training in how to work with victims of domestic violence.
The full-time officer will also be responsible for community education.

Virginia Tech fans are seeing Orange and a local printing company is tickled
Scribners Screen Printing makes shirts for Tech's off-campus bookstore.
Since the announcement of the Orange Bowl matchup with Nebraska, Scribners
has been working non-stop.
So far the company has filled four orders totaling 15-hundred pieces.
Last year they sold more than three thousand Sugar Bowl shirts.
Greg Scribner says this year's late bowl announcement made the selleing
season shorter, but he's happy with the sales for the Orange Bowl merchandise.

Virginia's largest health insurer is no longer threatening to drop Danville
Regional Medical Center from its network.
The hospital and Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield have reached a new two year
About a month ago, Trigon threatened to drop the non-profit hospital from
its network at the end of the year.
Trigon officials argued that the hospital's costs were approximately 30-
percent higher than comparable facilities in the area.
First, some important research concerning breast cancer.
Breast cancer patients may need to have more tissue removed to keep the
cancer from coming back.
Researchers have found that healthy-looking tissue around breast tumors may
be precancerous about 30 percent of the time.
The findings appear in "Science" magazine.

And for those who drink whiskey-- don't necessarily turn your nose up to
the cheap stuff.
Researchers say it may actually be safer for you than expensive labels.
Dutch scientists say they found all whiskeys tested had cancer causing
But the most expensive posed more of a danger.
The cheap whiskey had fewer carcinogens.
Not surprisingly, the Scottish Whiskey Association is furious and doubts
the study's findings.
They're the first thing out of the door with you in the morning, and the
last thing to come home with you at night.
