At the Japanese embassy in Peru the hostage situation is now in its fourth
Leftist rebels are threatening to kill some 375 hostages and themselves if
the Perurivian government doesn't release hundreds of their jailed comrades.
But news reports out of Lima today say the government does not plan to give

President Clinton fills out his Cabinet today.
A White House aide says Transportation Secretary Federico Pena is staying
on after all, but moving to the Energy Department.
Federal Highway Administrator Rodney Slater has gets Pena's old job.
The aide also says White House aide Alex Herman has been chosen for Labor
And Andrew Cuomo, son of former New York governor Mario Cuomo, will become

The Justice Department is expanding its investigation of fund raising by
the Democratic party.
Subpoenas have been issued to the White House and to President Clinton's
legal defense fund.
The Justice Department wants to see records related to the return of
600-thousand dollars in questioned donations.
The contributions were from an Asian- American businessman.
Meanwhile, a source has told The Associated Press that a Chinese
arms dealer attended a White House reception in February.
The source says aides were unaware of the dealer's ties to China's
Communist government when he was invited.
Falwell versus Flynt is back.
Lynchburg evangelist Jerry Falwell has revived his old debate with porn
publisher Larry Flynt.
The two plan a joint appearance on cable T-V tonight.

The federal jury in Roanoke concluded Flynt had intentionally inflicted
"emotional distress" on Falwell by publishing a parody of a liquor ad,

The Supreme Court eventually overturned the trial court's decision. Falwell
got nothing, but said yesterday he enjoyed every minute of what he
unapologetically calls an attempt to put Flynt out of business.
A late night fire in Shawsville leaves a family homeless.
The Elliston Fire Department responded to the call shortly before midnight.
It was first dispatched as a flue fire, but when the fire fighters arrived
the house on Dark Run Road was fully engulfed.
Five people were home when the blaze broke out, but no one was injured.
The house, including everything inside, was a total loss.
Fire officials aren't sure what caused the fire.

A man made famous for explaining the mysteries of the stars is dead.
Astronomer Carl Sagan died of pneumonia today in Seattle.
He had become a celebrity by popularizing space through his books,
lectures and T-V series ``Cosmos.''
Sagan was 62.
Some startling news concerning breast cancer.
Breast cancer patients may need to have more tissue removed to keep the
cancer from coming back.
Researchers have found that healthy-looking tissue around breast tumors may
be precancerous about 30 percent of the time.
The findings appear in ``Science'' magazine.
Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer is both disappointed and fed
For the first time since two of his players were charged with rape, Beamer
spoke publicly about the trouble his program has faced recently.
While Brian Edmonds and James Crawford are the most recent players to make
headlines, the program's problems date back more than a year, and Beamer made
it clear yesterday the off field problem must stop.

A rare Brazilian monkey has made a big comeback.
Twelve years ago the Golden Lion Tamarin was on the edge of extinction
when its population nose dived to less than 100.
Now, thanks to a global initiative the rare monkey is on the road to
The World Wide Fund for Nature, who call this the wildlife story of 19-96,
says their are now some 800 Tamarins living in the wild.
The Mill Mountain Zoo is home to a few of these furry creatures.
