With two more shopping days left until Christmas, retailers are pleasantly surprised.
They say this year's figures seem to be surpassing last year's holiday season.
Local merchants say even though the traditional shopping season was shorter this year, buyers seem to be spending more money.

Don't expect Virginia schools to start teaching "black English" anytime soon.
School administrators throughout the state say teachers don't have a problem understanding students who speak "black english."
Recently, school officials in Oakland, California ruled that black students who use double negatives or incorrect grammar are speaking a legitimate foreign language, called Ebonics.
Supporters say the new language will help raise test scores among African- American students.
But many educators say it simply encourages children to use incorrect grammar.
