It's being called the worst air-craft disaster in Southwestern Virginia...
Now Federal officials are hoping the flight data recorders will give some
insight on the crash of the cargo plane that killed six people.

The Airborne Express Cargo plane went down in Giles County at about 6:15
The "black boxes" are now in Washington.
The delivery company recently purchased the plane and workers were taking it
on a test flight from North Carolina to Ohio.
Scott Prince traveled to the site and has this report.

Even though leftist rebels in Peru released 225 of their captives last
night-- 140 people are still being held hostage at the Japanese ambassador's
The Tupac Amaru says their freedom depends on the release of the guerilla
group's 300 comrades.
Peru's government is still refusing to comply-- today, a former leader of
the rebel group warned the government against giving in.

It brought a big sigh of relief to his relatives in Roanoke County.

Alami's sister Stella was also taken hostage when terrorists stormed the
residence in Lima.
She was released a few days before her husband.
Alami spoke with (Merr-Shrawd) Merschrod today.
He told her that the hostages were treated surprisingly well.
In spite of the situation, there was a relatively relaxed atmosphere, and
the hostages were NOT sitting around the house since Tuesday with guns pointed
to their heads.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser
Arafat will meet tomorrow.
They will apparently try to wrap up a deal on Israel's troop pullout from
the West Bank town of Hebron.
A Palestinian official says U-S Mideast envoy Dennis Ross will take part in
Russian President Boris Yeltsin is back on the job after being away from
the Kremlin for nearly six months.
Yeltsin looked much thinner and still a bit unsteady-- several weeks after
major heart surgery.
Still, he says he's feeling well and ready for action.
He appeared in good spirits as he talked to guards outside his office.
But former Russian national security advisor Alexander (Leh-bed) Lebed says
Yeltsin is too sick to run the country.
Lebed, who was fired by Yeltsin, alleges the President is drinking again.

A familiar Republican has stepped forward hoping to fill the shoes of state
senator elect Roscoe Reynolds.
58- year old Phil Plaster announced over the weekend he's seeking the
republican nomination to run in the special election.
Plaster is a former member of the Patrick County board of supervisors
He ran once before for Reynolds' seat in 1995.
Last week, Democrat Barnie Day announced his intentions to run for state
The earliest date for a special election is January 14th.
It's not exactly Miami Vice, but it may be as close as Bedford County will
get to it.
The Sheriff's Department added two 1997 Camaros to its fleet, for use by the
department's newly- created Crime Suppression Unit.
Not only are the patrol cars loaded with radar detection-- but also, video
recorders and breathalyzer equipment.
They've also been outfitted with Corvette engines, giving them a little
extra punch on the road.

Brown says the Crime Suppression Unit will work with other law enforcement
agencies in cracking down on DUI and drug offenders in the county.
The city of Roanoke has an early Christmas gift for visitors to Mill
The Walnut Street bridge re-opened today.
The bridge was torn up a year ago, forcing people who had used Walnut Street
to get to the mountain to take a detour.
The project was finished on time, and on budget.
It includes some new decorative lighting.
The contractor still has some painting to do, but the bridge will remain
open during that work.
On the campus of Radford University, students are feeling the spirit of the
holidays....by giving to others.
A quarter of the student population has donated three-thousand dollars to
fight hunger, with the "Skip-A-Meal" hunger drive.
17-hundred students gave a lunch from their meal plans.
The university will give the money to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The firemen donated their truck for the big event, cheerleaders chanted

As expected, The New york giants fired head coach Dan Reeves today ending
their four year association.
Reeves led the Giants to an 11 and 5 season in 1993 and into the N-f-C
The Giants went 6 and 10 this season and Reeves finishes with a 31 and 33

There's also an opening in Atlanta where the Falcons fired head coach June
Jones. Jones suffered through a stormy season including the suspension and

They said good bye to R-F-K Stadium yesterday and the Skins hosted the
Cowboys. Photographer Scott Ayers was among the thousands that showed up for
the final game at the historic Stadium.

It would be a Christmas story any time of year.... they are China's
unwanted children....very much wanted by childless Americans.
Of almost 10-thousand children adopted internationally last year, more
than half were from Asia, more than 21-hundred from China alone.
A traditional preference for boys and the government's strict policy of
one child per family has left orphanages crowded with girls.

The steady stream of children from China has given hope to thousands of
Americans, wishing to adopt-- especially older couples who have trouble
adopting in this country.
The Chinese want adoptive parents to be at least 35.

Still the sudden popularity of China's orphans may be proving too much
for Chinese bureaucracy.
In the face of overwhelming demand, the Chinese are re-organizing
procedures for adoption.
While some cases are now on hold-- thousands of once-abandoned little
girls now have new traditions in a new land.....granting their parents the wish
of a lifetime.
