Two people escaped serious injury this morning after their tractor trailor was smashed to pieces on Interstate 81.

The trailer was the only vehicle involved.
The two occupants were trapped inside for over an hour and a half.
One was transported to the hospital by lifeguard 10, but police say neither had life threatening injuries.

22- year- old Clarence Patterson was shot in the hip at the Hunt Manor apartments last night.
Police say two men accosted Patterson, pulled out guns and fired several shots.
Patterson was hit once.
The suspects threatened another man before fleeing on foot.
Police spent more than an hour looking for bullets and shell casings.
Patterson was scheduled for surgery at Roanoke Memorial Hospital last night-- officials are not releasing his condition.

Corrections spokesman David Botkins says Eddie Pearson was seriously hurt but his wounds are not life threatening.
Four inmates suffered minor injuries.
Botkins says the stabbing happened yesterday afternoon near the mess hall.
About 200 inmates were in the Rec yard at the time.
Those inmates refused to return to their cells for about 45 minutes.
Botkins says dogs and a warning shot from a non-lethal pellet gun helped get the situation under control.
The stabbing is under investigation, and the department has a suspect who has NOT yet been charged.

The department says the 950 bed, maximum security prison was in "chaos"...but it was NOT a riot.

Torgersen says last summer, the number of visitors who came to check out the campus increased 50 percent.
So far this year, early decision applications are up 30 percent.
Officials are convinced the athletic success is directly related, though they're quick to point out other factors as well.
