During a two month stretch this spring Botetourt County sealed the deal on four separate industrial locations.
Employers including York, Dynax, and Meadville Forging will create hundreds of new jobs in the area.
Around the same time, Frito Lay announced plans to put a new plant in Lynchburg that will create 800 positions.
The Hill City beat out competitors from several other states jockeying for the snack food giant.
Earlier in the year Roanoke County landed a big one when R-R Donnelley announced plans to put a book factory in its industrial park.
The company projects it could employ up to 700 people within a few years.
Southside Virginia took two big hits in 1996.
First Sara Lee Knit Products closed its last plant in the area, costing about 400 jobs.
Then Dupont announced plans to close its nylon operation in Henry County, eliminating roughly 550 positions.
The top story of the year involved the bidding war for Philadelphia based Conrail.
Two large employers in our area, Norfolk Southern and C-S-X, are willing to spend billions for it, but so far no one has won this battle.
