Rather than the 2-year prison term set by a Halifax jury, Policeman Larry Jerome Stovall will spend TWO MONTHS in jail.
He was convicted of theft and kicked off the South Boston Police force.

And according to officials at the National Transportation Safety Board, that's the direction in which the investigation is now heading.

A day later, investigators ruled out weather as a possible factor.

A final crash report might not be completed until the fall.

A former South Boston police officer convicted of embezzlement has avoided a two year jail term.

A jury recommended a two year sentence for 42- year old Larry Jerome Stoval when he was convicted last year.
But today a judge reduced the jury's recommendation to 60- days in jail.
Stovall was convicted of taking more than one thousand dollars seized in drug raids as well as misappropriating state police funds used for drug investigations.
The judge also ordered the former South Boston narcotics investigator to pay the money back and pay court costs.

State Police are investigating the Bedford County Sheriff's department following a citizen's complaint of police brutality.
David Fielder of Bedford says deputies roughed him up when he was arrested for disorderly conduct at a Smith Mountain Lake restaurant in June.
Fielder and 37 other people were charged that night, mostly with minor offenses.

The Washington D-C offices of an Arabic newspaper were the target of four letter bombs today.

Authorities took the bombs and detonated them near R-F-K Stadium.
Police say the bombs could have been deadly, but no one was injured.

Meanwhile three similar bombs were found at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas.

His name kept coming up in the investigation of "straw man" loan schemes, and now Roanoke- area real-estate attorney Barry Flora is ready to plead guilty.
The one- time law partner of Vinton Delegate Dick Cranwell has worked out a plea agreement with the U-S Attorney's office.
Flora was never indicted. His cooperation the government earned him a single misdemeanor charge.
It involves a 40-thousand dollar bank loan. Court papers indicate Flora has agreed to pay back the money.
First Security Bank lent Flora's Title Insurance Company the 40-Grand in 1989, but Flora endorsed the check to Franklin County businessman William Roberts.

The Virginia tech Hokies returned from a sunny Miami...to a sunny Roanoke today.

Around 1:30, the Hokies touchdown at Roanoke Regional Airport after their stay in Miami for the Orange Bowl.
The Hokies got off the plane and most of the players and coaches got back on a bus headed for Blacksburg.
A few fans were on hand to welcome the Hokies home.
While Tech lost, the 17 seniors involved can be proud of the foundation they have laid.
