Officials say the woman apparently poured kerosene into her wood stove, which already contained hot coals.
The fire flared up, and the woman dropped the container, allowing the blaze to spread.
She escaped without injury, but the home was a total loss.
Crews from Altavista and Evington responded to the call on Route 682.

But officials released the murder victims name yesterday.

The third in a series of Northwest storms brought more rain... 100-mile-per-hour wind gusts along the Washington coast, and warmer weather. The snow in the lower areas has melted away; the trouble is there's nowhere for the water to go:
To the south in Pullman, Washington, run-off from wheat fields combined with the Palouse River to rush through town.
Downtown Ashland, Oregon, had whitewater rapids swirling through.
Some progress toward recovery is being made. Interstate 90 through Washington reopened Wednesday after being closed since Christmas. Truckers didn't waste much time roaring out of town.
