A long laundry list of layoffs in the past month-- is it a coincidence or a

The recent closings, temporary plant shutdowns and layoffs are affecting
hundreds of people in our area--
Yesterday employees at Allen Morrison in Lynchburg were told they were out of
Hanover Direct in Roanoke County, New River Castings and the Salem G-E plant
are among other companies dealing with a slow-down.
But officials from the economic development sector, don't believe these
changes are the beginning of a recession.

The trial is scheduled to begin in mid- February, but the evaluation of
Bramblett's competency could force a delay.
A state trooper shot a man during a confrontation outside a Campbell County
store this afternoon.
Trooper Keith Kincaid was on routine patrol around 3:20 when he spotted a
man outside Carpenter's Market who Campbell County sheriff's deputies had been
chasing earlier in the day.
Kincaid approached the man, who reportedly made a threatening move.
The trooper then shot the man once in the shoulder.
State police are just beginning their investigation.

Police have identified the man as 18- year- old Brad Jerome Miller, who was
wanted for failing to appear in court.
Miller remains in stable condition at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Attorney General Jim Gilmore may oppose federal regulation of tobacco, but
that doesn't mean he's soft on teen smoking.
To back up that stance, he wants to put some serious teeth into Virginia's
own laws on the issue.
Under Gilmore's proposal, kids who buy cigarettes AND the merchants who sell
them could be fined 500- dollars.
The current fine is 50- dollars.

A special commission on Gulf War Syndrome isn't due to report it's
findings to President Clinton until next week.
But according to a CBS News report, the panel of medical experts has some
harsh words for the Pentagon in it's investigation of the illness.
The panel apparently doesn't call it a cover-up-- but says the Pentagon
didn't take seriously reports that U-S- troops had been exposed to chemical

Northside's basketball team..an un heard of OH and 7..until tonight. Hometown
Hoops Weekly ventured over into Viking territory where Rockbridge fell to the

Charger general manager Bobby Beathard will reportedly honor Ross' contract
