The federal government is investigating Virginia's air protection program to determine if state officials are too lenient on polluters.
The probe by the independent inspector general's office of the Environmental Protection Agency could result in the loss of millions of dollars in anti-pollution grants.

That's because the state allegedly failed to report properly on its monitoring of waste treatment plants under the Clean Water Act.
Virginia officials played down the investigation.
