A young Bedford County girl died after she was run over by a car near her home this afternoon.

The accident happened around 3 in this cul-de-sac at the end of Franklin Place off Hawkins Mill Road.
State police say four- year- old Lauren Paige Cobb and two friends were playing in the street when she ran to a nearby driveway to pick up some rocks.
At the same time, a neighbor was backing out of the driveway, and struck Cobb.
Authorities say the driver could not see the girl because of a pickup truck parked in the street.
Cobb died at the scene.
Trooper Rick Snead says it's not likely any charges will be filed, but he will forward the information to the commonwealth's attorney.

Police say the murder of a Roanoke man last week was racially motivated.
A teenager and another man were arrested today.
33- year- old Larry Edward Donahue was shot to death Monday night on a sidewalk on Chapman Avenue in Southwest Roanoke.
A 17- year- old boy was arrested this afternoon and taken to the Coyner Springs Juvenile Detention Center.
Michael Shrawn Benton was charged several hours later with murder and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Benton had been charged earlier today with possession of marijuana.

John and Patricia Ramsey, photographed leaving church service today, haven't spoken to investigators since their daughter's body was found the day after Christmas.
JonBenet Ramsey's body was discovered in the basement of the family home, three hours after her mother found a ransom note promising her safe return in exchange for more than 100 thousand dollars.
Police say they've completed a 10 day search of the family home, and are prepared to talk to the parents.
Investigators say they have no suspects, but are also telling Boulder residents they shouldn't be worried about a killer on the loose.

Two-thousand homes already have been destroyed after as much as 40 inches of rain in the past week.

Volunteers are busy rescuing animals trapped in homes that were evacuated long ago.

This dog has been here for the past four days.
Despite rescuers' best efforts he did not want to leave...man's best friend now alone.
Some of the water has started to recede, exposing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Mandatory evacuations have been lifted from some areas but the flooding is nowhere near over.
Weak levees continue to give way, and if it's not water, it's mud that's a problem.
This disaster is expected to have long-term effects.
Thousands of flood victims are now able to return to their homes.
They're unsure though what, if anything, they're going to find.
HELP IS NOW COMING IN FROM WASHINGTON.
President Clinton has sent the federal emergency management agency to tour some of the hardest-hit areas.
FEMA Director James Lee Witt spent Sunday in Idaho and Nevada assessing the damage and meeting with community leaders.
Meanwhile the cleanup is just beginning.
With each passing day the water seems to drop...with each passing day the damage estimate seems to rise.

A Lynchburg man trying to renovate his home ended up nearly burning it down this morning.

Fire authorities say Ryan Ganim (GAN-im) and his landlord were stripping the floors in his James Street home when the fire broke out.
The two men apparently were using a blowtorch to dry up water on the floor.. the flames from the torch ignited fumes from the floor, catching the house on fire.
Ganim and the other man escaped the burning home, although both suffered minor burns.
All but one room in the four- room house was gutted by fire.

The law is so little-known and little-used that many law enforcement officials were unaware of its existence.
The medicinal use of marijuana was approved by the Virginia General Assembly as part of a general loosening of the state's laws against possession and distribution of small amounts of the drug.
State medical authorities don't know if Virginia doctors have ever prescribed marijuana since the law was approved.

Helmsley died of pnuemonia in Scottsdale, Arizona... he was 87.

The Patriots would score again in the first quarter. Bledsoe throws the screen to Keith Byars, who played in that fog bowl, and he takes it down the sideline 34 yards for the touchdown and a 14 to nothing lead.
New England added to its 14 to nothing halftime lead when Bledsoe pitches the ball to Martin. He cuts back up the middle and scores from 78 yards out, giving the Patriots a 21 to nothing lead in the third.
Pittsburgh added a field goal in the third but Martin gets the call again this time. He scores from 23 yards out and New England beats Pittsburgh 28 to 3 to advance to the A-F-C championship game.
