The Centers for Disease Control says juice lovers should stick to
pasteurized or boiled juice-- rather than fresh products-- to avoid becoming
ill.
100 people became sick and one died in October alone as a result of
drinking contaminated apple juice.
Heat-treating juices kills the E-Coli bacteria-- believed to be
responsible for the illness
Meantime, researchers are worried that too much juice and not enough milk
can lead to growth problems in youngsters.
Studying kids ages two to five, they found that children who drank more
than 12 ounces of fruit juice a day more than tripled their risk of being short
and overweight.
The theory-- some kids take in so much fruit juice, there's little room
left for milk and more nutritious food.
Even though juices contain a lot of Vitamin C, they're generally low in
fiber, minerals, and other vitamins.
And with all the sugar in them-- fruit juices contain a lot of empty
calories.
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers these tips for parents:
Wait until your baby is six months old to give them fruit juice.
Have them drink juice from a cup-- not from a baby bottle.
