The so- called Thoroughbred of Transportation won a key battle in its

From the get- go, N-S played the role of the dark horse in its pursuit of
Conrail, the dominant railroad in the northeast.
N-S consistently ponied up more money for Conrail in the bidding war with
C-S-X.
But Conrail and C-S-X had created what one Conrail executive called a
"bulletproof" deal, in which competing bids would have a hard time being heard.
N-S reacted to the vote by saying "We think that the vote is a powerful
message from Conrail's owners that they will not be coerced into accepting the
deal CSX and Conrail tried to impose on them."
Conrail didn't let N-S celebrate long, announcing "The Conrail Board is
resolute -- Norfolk's actions will have no effect on our commitment to our
merger with CSX."
This was a vote people across our region have watched with interest since
N-S employs more than 3500 people here, and tens of thousands of people own its
