An early morning fire has left a Roanoke family homeless.
The call came in around five.
Fire officials say it appears the blaze started near the fireplace of 33-17
The blaze did an estimated 35-thousand dollars in damage.
The house is nearly a total loss.
No one was seriously injured, but a neighbor did hurt his hand when he tried
to alert the residents by knocking on the windows.
But the owners were not at home.
Officials say they had left the house after smelling smoke.
They told officials they thought the chimney was clogged.
The fire is under investigation.

developing a vision for southwest Virginia.

The New Century Council has decided to focus on six projects.
They says regional commerce parks will have the most impact on the region.
Developing these parks will allow governments in the region to earn money by
investing in an industrial park in another locality.

Bedford County wants to turn a popular area lake into source for drinking
And the Lynchburg fire department is trying to make chaotic fire scenes a
thing of the past.

Bedford County plans to be the first county in Virginia to turn lake water
into drinking water.

As an alternative to dry wells and water that's trucked-in, the county wants
to build a high-tech water treatment plant at Smith Mountain Lake.
The county has been working on the plan for two years.
Officials estimate the cost of the plant at 750-thousand-dollars.
The county hopes to begin building the plant in the spring.
First, though, the county must get the approval of state agencies.
You've seen the images on t-v before.. a building engulfed in flames,
firefighters rushing every which way to put the blaze out.
Now, in Lynchburg, those efforts are becoming more organized.
The Hill City's fire department is implementing a new strategy that will
govern the way its crews fight fires.
Mostly, the incident command plan helps organize the personnel on a fire
scene, taking some of the stress off the person in charge of the operation.

An urgent appeal for blood donations from the Appalachian Region of the
American Red Cross.
There's a critical need for Type O blood-- the most common type.
The shortage is attributed to the usual holiday decline in donations--
combined with the continuing spread of flu in the region, and the recent winter
weather that forced the cancellation of several blood drives.
To be eligible to donate you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least
110 pounds, and be in reasonably good health.
You can donate every 56 days.

Belk, the new owner of the Leggett chain, is closing two locations in
Bedford and Altavista.
The 31 remaining Leggetts will be renamed Belk in the coming months.
Two longtime rivals in the Roanoke-Lynchburg radio market will soon be

Conrail shareholders have voted against putting a proposed merger with C-S-X
on a fast track.
As a result, rival suitor Norfolk Southern says it will go ahead with plans
to buy up Conrail stock as part of a richer, hostile bid.

The Virginia Tech Women's Distance Medley Relay team set a new school
record yesterday in the first meet on Tech's new Mondo Indoor track at Rector
The Mondo 200 meter six lane indoor track was set up Friday on the start of
the Invitational track meet that ended yesterday.
The track is designed with varied banks to allow the fastest angle of run
which will improve times in most events.
Its only one of five in the United States and it can only help the track
programs at Tech.
