An early morning fire has left a Roanoke family homeless.
The call came in around five.
Fire officials say it appears the blaze started near the fireplace of 33-17
Ventnor Avenue.

The blaze did an estimated 35-thousand dollars in damage.
The house is nearly a total loss.
No one was seriously injured, but a neighbor did hurt his hand when he tried
to alert the residents by knocking on the windows.
But the owners were not at home.
Officials say they had left the house after smelling smoke.
They told officials they thought the chimney was clogged.
The fire is under investigation.

into drinking water.

The county has been working on the plan for two years.

First, though, the county must get the approval of state agencies.

Belk, the new owner of the Leggett chain, is closing two locations in
Bedford and Altavista.
The 31 remaining Leggetts will be renamed Belk in the coming months.
Two longtime rivals in the Roanoke-Lynchburg radio market will soon be
partners.
Q-99 is buying K-92.
Conrail shareholders have voted against putting a proposed merger with C-S-X
on a fast track.
As a result, rival suitor Norfolk Southern says it will go ahead with plans
to buy up Conrail stock as part of a richer, hostile bid.
Checking the financial markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the
6800 barrier, surging 129 points for the week, the Nasdaq composite also had a
strong five days, finishing up 17 points.
