A teenage girl escapes from fire that kills two of her brothers and destroys
the family home.

Good Evening-- I'm Jean Jadhon.
It happened in the Pipers Gap section of Carroll County.
The blaze broke out in the two-story frame house around five this morning,
as Edward Spears and his four children were sleeping.

16 year- old Jennifer Spears escaped through a basement door.
A brother and her father also made it to safety.
But two other brothers, 11 year- old Mark Spears and 13 year- old John died
in their upstairs bedroom.
The children's mother was away at work.
The tragedy shocked and saddened the family's neighbors.

The Twin County United Way has set up a fund for anyone wishing to help the
Edward Spears is being treated for smoke inhalation.
His 14 year- old son is hospitalized with burns.
A Henry County deputy is on administrative leave after shooting and killing
a man who allegedly threatened the officer.

It happened last night.
Deputies pulled David Roy Craighead over at Clarence's Steak House in
Ridgeway. They wanted to question him about damage to an apartment.
But Sheriff Frank Cassell says the 35-year old jumped out of the car and ran
behind the restaurant.
When the officers approached Craighead he reportedly refused to drop the
tire iron he was carrying.
Cassell says one of the deputies sprayed Craighead with pepper spray but he
would not surrender.
Cassell says he continued to move toward the deputies and Corporal Jay
Engstrom fired his gun more than once.

A state medical examiner says Craighead died quickly of multiple gun shot
State police are investigating.
An accident in Montgomery County injured four people this afternoon.
Two cars collided on Prices Fork Road near the intersection of Peppers
Two people were taken by ambulance to Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Lifeguard-10 flew two victims to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
No word yet on their names or conditions.
A Kentucky man says he's truly sorry... and if he could relive that late
September day... things would have turned out differently.

About four months ago... 19-year old Timmy Stocks led authorities on a high
speed chase through Botetourt County.
It ended with a three car collision that killed a Covington man.
This afternoon, Stocks pled guilty to two charges... second degree murder
and eluding a police officer.
One of the other men involved in the wreck recounted the experience.

Health officials determined it was a hot tub at a Lowe's store in
Christiansburg that caused an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease in the New River
Valley last fall.
But a national expert on the subject says he's not convinced.
Doctor Victor Yu from the V-A Medical Center in Pittsburgh shared his
theories with area physicians last night.
Yu says Legionella bacteria doesn't simply disappear after a suspicious
source is disinfected.
He encouraged doctors to search for further causes.

There were 16 cases in the New River Valley outbreak, two people died.
Doctors are one step closer to understanding the cause of schizophrenia.
Researchers have discovered a gene associated with the disease.
The gene is also linked to a nicotine receptor in the brain which may
explain why many people with schizophrenia are heavy smokers.
The nicotine from cigarettes may help reduce symptoms associated with the
disease such as hearing voices and delusions.

Parents of asthmatic children should try to watch them take their
medication-- so they can be sure they aren't forgetting.
Methamphetamine, also known as speed or crank, has become the drug of
choice for many teenagers.
To help your kids, it may be important to recognize the warning signs that
they may be using drugs.
Look for dramatic changes in behavior, like moodiness, withdrawal, or loss
of interest in sports or hobbies.
Physical symptoms include neglecting personal appearance, changing sleep
patterns or unexplained loss of weight or appetite.
Finally, look for changes at school.

In college basketball news the VMI Keydets picked up another unlikely road
