A Henry County sheriff's deputy is on paid leave after he shot and killed a man, reportedly in self-defense.

It happened Monday night when deputies pulled David Roy Craighead over at a steak house in Ridgeway to question him about damage to an apartment.
Sheriff Frank Cassell says the 35- year- old jumped out of the car and ran behind the restaurant.
When the officers approached Craighead he reportedly refused to drop the tire iron he was carrying.
Cassell says one of the deputies sprayed Craighead with pepper spray but he failed to surrender.
Cassell says he continued to move toward the deputies and Corporal Jay Engstrom fired his gun more than once.

The chairman of the Surface Transportation Board hopes Norfolk Southern and C-S-X can reach a settlement that will preserve competition on the east coast, no matter who ends up with Conrail.
If not, the board is prepared to impose a plan that would split up Conrail's coveted northern routes.
The question is, would the company that gets Conrail have to sell key routes to the spurned suitor, or just give it equal access?
The board looks at these decisions on a case by case basis.

The Danville guard members generally undergo their annual training at Fort Pickett in the summer but received news they are being sent there in less than a week.

In Henry County, a State police investigation is underway after a deputy fatally shot a suspect who was allegedly wielding a tire iron.
