The right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their
children shall be a fundamental right.
That's all a proposed amendment to Virginia's Constitution says.
But it's sparking a political showdown in Richmond.
And with the urging of the Christian Coalition, it prompted what may be the
General Assembly's best attended public hearing ever.

A tense procedural fight broke out in the Senate today, just over when the
parents rights bill would be considered.
A gunshot wound to the chest is apparently what killed a teenager last night
19- year old Derrick Lavar Crawford was shot once in the chest at an
apartment on Ferry Road.
Police were notified after someone reported hearing gunshots in the area.
Crawford was from Pennsylvania but was staying with a cousin while job
Authorities say two men were seen running from the area, but they do not
have any suspects.
This is Danville's second murder in less than two weeks.
Authorities are still looking for the person who shot and killed 40- year
old Johnny Alphonso Motley.
The Danville man was murdered on Keen Street.
Valery Green says she's being "DOGGED."
This afternoon, the breeder had all of her animals taken away from her...
after witnesses testified she mistreated her dogs and cats.

Valery Green is out of business.
The Franklin County breeder was forced to surrender her 100 or so animals to
the Humane society... after a judge decided she was not equipped to handle
Prosecution witnesses testified that her dogs and cats were not kept after,
and that Green had mistreated them.

Green had plenty to say throughout the three hour hearing.
She was consistently whispering at the defendant's table... and at one point
her attorney told her to shut up.
Then as she testified in her own defense she left the witness stand to
retrieve some papers.
All the while she continued her testimony.
After about a half hour, Green admitted that she had too many animals.

Immediately after the decision was made to take the animals away... Green
filed an appeal.
That means the Humane Society can not put any of the animals up for adoption
until that appeal is heard.
Green is expected to be in Franklin County CIRCUIT court in two weeks...
where she'll face criminal animal cruelty charges.

new way to summon help.
Today, local officials and representatives of the A- D- T Corporation
announced the AWARE program.
Security systems and emergency pendants allow battered and abused women to
send silent alarms if they believe they are in imminent danger.

The governor who led Virginia to abolish parole is in another way the most
forgiving guy in recent memory.
Governor George Allen has set a late 20th century record for granting full
pardons to prisoners.

A judge in Fincastle today ordered Penny Stallins to serve SIX MONTHS in
The former golf pro and phys ed teacher from Salem got caught buying a
couple of ounces of cocaine from an informant.
It came out in court today that she'd been using coke and helping others
get it for ten years- -long before she quit teaching.
Stallins cited her disability as a reason she should not go to jail.
Prosecutor Joel Branscom acknowledged Stallins is "genuinely remorseful,"
but he pointed out she used her disability check from the state to pay for the
In addition to the six-month jail term, Judge George Honts ordered her to
pay a 5-thousand dollar fine and the County confiscated her 1987 Pontiac.

Health officials say the number of cases of whooping cough in Virginia in 1996
was the highest in 26 years.
Officials say 102 cases of the children's disease were reported
last year, compared with 31 cases in 1995.
The majority of cases
occurred last fall.
Whooping is transmitted by
sneezing and coughing.
It resembles a cold in its early stages.

State Health officials are advising parents to make sure their children's
vaccination schedule is up to date.
There is no vaccine against whooping cough for adults.
The Dow hovered above the 69 hundred mark for a short time today before

Glade Spring resident Harold Lester, who is a student at Emory and Henry
rubbed shoulders with Franco Harris and Joe Namath today.
Lester was one of six nationwide finalists in Coke's Red zone contest.
