Greg Melvin would've been the first in a group of present and former players
to stand trial for a campus brawl.

The judge was prepared to try Melvin for assault and battery until
Montgomery County prosecutor Phil Keith asked to dismiss the case.

Hilliard Sumner, the alleged beating victim told Melvin's lawyer in a taped
conversation he thought Melvin might be charged in his companion Jonathan
Nelson's attack, but not his.

stemming from the fight.
The others, along with Cornell Brown, Tyron Edmond and Nathaniel Williams
are charged with assault and battery.
Prosecutor Keith says he DOES plan to proceed with those cases.

A Campbell County man is in custody, charged with malicious wounding after
he allegedly ambushed another man early this morning.
It happened around 7:15 at this trailer on Route 673 near Evington.
Police say 38- year- old Edward Lee Miller of Madison Heights was shot in
the chest and arm as he left the trailer.
Authorities believe 28- year- old Kevin Lewis Epperson had been hiding under
the front porch, waiting for Miller to come out.

Miller is listed in serious condition at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Epperson is being held without bond pending a court appearance tomorrow.
A Roanoke jury will decide whether Steven Leftwich was the aggressor, or the
victim when police arrested him for assault a year ago.
The defense says Leftwich was attacked by police officers who ganged up on
him after finding marijuana in his car during a traffic stop.

The defense will begin presenting it's case tomorrow.
Stella Arcaro called 9-1-1 in Christiansburg last April. She was depressed,
threatening to commit suicide.
Half a dozen town police responded, one of them opened fire when Arcaro
stepped out the back door with a rifle.
Attorney Bill Cruey today filed suit against Officer Alicia Smith and the
Town of Christiansburg.

The complaint filed in federal court today asks five million dollars in
O-J Simpson's defense team is asking a jury to give him his life back.

In his final argument today, Simpson's defense atttorney Mark Baker accused
former detective Mark Fuhrman of planting the now infamous "bloody glove", and
said Simpson didn't have time to commit the murders and make it home to meet
his ride to the airport.
The prosecution countered by saying the defense is accusing EVERYBODY of
lying, including Nichole Simpson.
Bill Cosby now admits he had an affair with the mother of Autumn Jackson-
the woman who allegedly tried to extort money from him.
But Cosby says he is not Jackson's father.

A 20-year old killer was sentenced today in Roanoke County to 42- years in
prison for beating a man to death last year.
Christopher Saul used two different weapons to fatally beat 26-year-old
The victim had given Saul a ride to the garage where he worked.
Saul took the witness stand today to apologize for his actions, claiming
Wilson made sexual advances and that prompted him to over-react.
Judge Roy Willett focused on the brutality of the crime, which he said
could have supported a capital murder charge.
Saul got 35 years to serve on the first-degree murder conviction, plus 7
years for the robbery.
It's New York State versus tobacco companies.

The Ferrum mens basketball team improved to 10 and 6 on the season last

A referendum will held in August to see if voters are interested in funding a

Civic Center officials say the ice that was in place over the weekend lacked

The Roanoke Symphony and Roanoke Valley Choral Society are cutting a
