The Senate did give its final approval to a bill that would retire the state song.
Senators Steve Newman of Lynchburg and Louise Lucas, who represents Halifax County, are pushing the compromise.
It would gracefully retire "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" as the "state song emeritus."
If the House and Governor approve, a commission would then look for a new state song... that would presumably offend fewer Virginians.
There is, however, a competing bill in the House.
It would make a composition by singer and sausage king Jimmy Dean and his wife Donna the new state song.
