The Senate did give its final approval to a bill that would retire the state
Senators Steve Newman of Lynchburg and Louise Lucas, who represents Halifax
County, are pushing the compromise.
It would gracefully retire "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" as the "state
If the House and Governor approve, a commission would then look for a new
state song... that would presumably offend fewer Virginians.
There is, however, a competing bill in the House.
It would make a composition by singer and sausage king Jimmy Dean and his
wife Donna the new state song.
A new housing study suggests that Danville and Charlottesville are two of
the least segregated cities in America.
The study by a researcher at the University of Michigan used 1990 census
data, and analyzed the racial patterns in residential neighborhoods.
Gary, Indiana was the most segregated city. Danville and Charlottesville
were 14th and 15th on the list of least segregated cities.
Construction delays and wet weather have combined to push back the hiring of
hundreds of workers for Lynchburg's new Frito-Lay plant.
Today city leaders got a glimpse at how the work is progressing.

Frito- Lay officials also made a presentation to Lynchburg city council
during its bimonthly meeting tonight.
AND council voted unanimously to apply for federal funds to renovate the
city's old Amtrak station.
Plans call for refurbishing the building, sprucing up the grounds and making
the area more attractive to retail businesses.
Lynchburg's hoping three million dollars in transportation money will pay
for the project.
Amtrak has indicated it is willing to contribute a quarter million dollars.
It could be another year before the city knows if the money will be

The Singer Company may soon get out of the furniture business altogether.
Less than a year ago it announced the closing of its Roanoke plant.
Last month it restructured even further, cutting jobs in North Carolina.
Now the company says it lost 20- million- dollars in its fourth quarter.
It blames the shortfall on its furniture division.
It says for that reason it may have to shut it down.
But some Singer Furniture executives are looking at another option.
They're considering whether to buy the division and spin it off into an

Today, researchers announced that human tests will begin early this year on
a chemical compound that could prevent influenza.
Known as G-S 41- 04, the pill apparently works on animals, but clinical
trials must be done to determine if it is safe and effective on humans.
Unlike vaccines, the new compound appears to be effective against several
strains of the flu.
For most of us, a case of the flu means a few days of discomfort, but each
year influenza claims thousands of lives in the U-S alone.
