Senators Steve Newman of Lynchburg and Louise Lucas, who represents Halifax County and points east, are pushing the compromise.
It would retire "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" as the state song emeritus.
If the House and Governor approve, a commission would then look for a new, less offensive state song.

Southside authorities are continuing to round up suspects nearly a week after concluding a large scale drug investigation.

So far, federal, state and local police have placed 109- suspects under arrest.
The majority were taken into custody last week while authorities had a command post set up at the former Mount Herman Elementary school, near Danville.
At this point, authorities are still searching for more than 30- suspects.
The undercover drug investigation, dubbed "Operation Flashpoint" took more than a year to complete.
Most of the suspects are from the Pittsylvania County area.

Three men wearing ski masks held up a Blacksburg convenience store last night.
Police say one stood outside the A and J Quick Shop on North Main Street as a lookout, while the other two forced a clerk at gunpoint into a back room.

His condition was revealed in a court document at his money laundering trial in Asheville, North Carolina.
