A Roanoke jury rejects Leftwich's claim that police officers attacked him.

It came down to Leftwich's word against Roanoke Police.
Steven Leftwich said police attacked him for no reason during a traffic
stop, beating him senseless on the ground.
But police say Leftwich was trying to pull out an officer's gun from the

Afterwards, Leftwich said he stands by his story.

Frank (Helv-uh-STEEN) Helvestine says he was an accessory BEFORE the fact
in a fatal car bombing 21-years ago in Roanoke County.
The explosion killed 23- month old Carrie Mask, who was walking nearby with
Helvestine's attorney says his client didn't intend for anyone to be hurt.
He's charged with murder, arson and malicious wounding.
18-year old Robert Reed pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Roanoke...the
Michigan man was charged with the July murder of Michael Dent who was stabbed
to death at the Hurt Park Apartment Complex.
Since Reed entered a plea to a lesser charge he faces a maximum prison term
of ten years.
In Carroll County-- a judge dismissed murder charges against Charles Howard
who spent the last four months in jail.
He was charged after he allegedly told his sister Willie Goins cursed him,
so he stabbed him to death out of anger.
But on the witness stand, Scotty Austin said she wasn't clear what her
brother had said.

The judge DID certify murder charges against Charles' wife Tisha (TEE-shuh)
Police say she admitted stabbing Goins while high on a drug-laced cigarette.
The jury in the O-J- Simpson trial knocked off work a few minutes early
today-- the panel's first full day of deliberations.

Unlike in the criminal trial, it takes only nine of the 12 jurors to reach
This jury has already taken longer than the jury that heard the criminal
case and aquitted Simpson in just a few hours.
In other news, parental notification for minor abortions has received the
green light it's needed for years in Virginia.
Abortion rights activists fought it... but for the first time in over a
decade, the bill was assigned to a friendly committee.

Governor Allen says he'll sign it.
An increase in the number of orders in the first quarter has prompted the
Radford Army Ammunition plant to recall some laid- off workers.
But even that hasn't been enough to prevent overtime hours.
Some workers have complained that 16- hour shifts pose safety risks.
Plant manager Ken Dolph says the overtime has been needed over the last
couple of weeks to meet two production deadlines by this weekend.
Dolph says the arsenal will respond to the safety concerns by providing
extra break periods and seeking volunteers from other areas of the plant.
This month the arsenal recalled about 75 laid- off workers.
125 new jobs are being created in the Glenvar area.

The Kroger supermarket chain is expanding its regional warehouse.
The company had actually considered moving the distribution center.
But Roanoke County is coaxing the company with more than one- point- seven-
million- dollars in incentives.
There's no word yet on when the hiring will begin.

She decided to cancel her account.

Walker wasn't alone in her gripes.
since offering unlimited online-time for 19.95 a month, a-o-l has been swamped
with complaints, accused of signing up hundreds of thousands of new users
without the means to accomodate them.
Today, under threats of lawsuits, the nation's largest online service
agreed to reimburse customers for their inability to log-on.

The settlement with 37 attorneys general will offer AOL subscribers up to
two months credit, all based on their previous time on-line.
AOL has also agreed to add a disclaimer to its advertisements, saying many
customers are having trouble signing on.
And the company has also agreed to make it easier for people to cancel
AOL will add more telephone lines for customers to fax in their requests.

The F-A-A announced today it will put safety information about air
carriers on the Internet, beginning this Saturday.
Rail giants CSX, Conrail and Norfolk Southern are finally coming together
to iron out a merger agreement.
After a meeting with analysts in New York, Norfolk Southern chief executive
David Goode confirmed that a time and place where N-S, C-S-X and Conrail will

The Virginia Bar Association has endorsed four candidates for one vacancy on
the state's highest court.
And former Salem Delegate Steve Agee (AY-jee) is NOT among them.
Agee is the only southwest Virginian out of 13 candidates for the seat left
vacant by retiring Justice Roscoe Stephenson of Covington.
The House and Senate expect to take up the issue tomorrow or Friday.
Sources say at this point Agee is a long shot.
Ericsson Incorporated of Lynchburg is going international--thanks to the
Governor George Allen was in the Hill City as Ericsson announced a 33-million
dollar deal to build radio dispatching equipment for the Korean National

On Health Check-- a bill to keep women from being forced out of hospitals
within hours of undergoing a mastectomy has been introduced in Washington.

length of a hospital stay for a mastectomy patient--
It would also require insurance plans to cover follow-up care and breast

The bill is similar to a law passed last year that requires at least a
two-day hospital stay for women after they have given birth.
The "New England Journal of Medicine" has come out in favor of prescribing
marijuana for medical use.
The journal says federal officials are "out of step" with the public on the

Over at the Roundhouse tonight the Express was back in business as the
Knoxville Cherokees came to town.

The Lady Maroons of Roanoke College won their 13-th straight game tonight
