Hope for millions of people who may go blind from glaucoma.
Iowa researchers have found a gene that can help in the early detection of a form of glaucoma found in people under age 20.
The gene discovery may lead to better treatments for all glaucoma patients.
(----------------)
VO-NAT

Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness-- so slowly and painlessly, that you don't even notice it until your vision is gone.
Your eye is actually a hollow structure, filled with fluid.
For some unknown reason, people with glaucoma have too much fluid, and the pressure from the fluid pinches the optic nerve in the back of the eye...over time, permanently damaging it.
Risk factors for glaucoma include age-- though most people don't develop glaucoma until after age 60--
Race is another risk factor.
