The judge dismissed one juror today- the only African American on the case-
and ordered the jury to start over with deliberations.
Jennifer Sabih is covering the case. She joins us with the latest from

(( The lawyers were summoned to judge hiroshi fujisaki's chambers first thing
in the morning. After almost 90-minutes behind closed doors, the parties
emerged and the jury was summoned for a brief open court session.
Judge Fujisaki told them simply, "ladies and gentlemen of the jury, a juror has
been excused for legal cause." The juror, 64-year old Rose Caraway, was
replaced by an asian man in his 30's who has said he has no opinion on O.J.
Simpson's guilt or innocence. Courtroom observers say the jury had little
reaction to the news.
BILL DE-HAVEN/COURTROOM OBSERVER: THEY SEEMED UPBEAT, NOT REAL UPSET.
Sources say Caraway was dismissed for failaing to tell the court during jury
selection that her daughter works for the Los Angeles District Attorney's
office which prosecuted O.J. Simpson for murder two years ago.
Now, joined by an alternate who had not been privy to the past several days of
deliberations, the judge ordered the new panel to start from scratch, which
means the deliberations will certainly go well into next week. ))

Six months after she shot her daughter during an argument, a Lynchburg woman
was given a six-month jail term for the crime.
41-year old Emma Jean Davis was convicted of the lesser offense of unlawful
wounding for shooting her daughter four times last July.

The jury decided Davis acted in the heat of passion after arguing with 26-
year old Tara Kim in their Augusta Street home.

Davis will be formally sentenced in March.
Republican attorney general candidate Gil Davis summoned reporters to a high
security news conference today to make his case publicly about an embarrassing
Davis appeared in Richmond, 90 minutes after a Patrick County judge released
him from his role as attorney for Ramona Hines.
He then offered his interpretation of the two year old videotape Hines made
public earlier this month.

Davis then challenged his three Republican opponents to sign a clean
Davis is Paula Jones' attorney in her lawsuit against President Clinton.
Four Ferrum College football players are accused of assault and battery,
after a brawl with one of their teammates.
But according to court documents, one of the accused players says the
alleged victim threw the first punch.
The incident happened last week during a pick-up basketball game at the
school's fitness center.
A Ferrum spokesman says a judicial committee has reviewed the case.

Al Anderson, Michael Bryant, David Cooper and leading rusher Maurice Clark
will be tried February 19th for the alleged beating of Wesley Mattera.
Mattera, however, will be arraigned next week because Clark filed battery

Cohen has asked the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to conduct a
thorough investigation of the incidents.
Officials from Conrail, C-S-X and Norfolk Southern have agreed mum's the
word about today's meeting in Washington, D-C.
They met to discuss the future of Conrail and agreed not to comment on the
Conrail and C-S-X want to combine, but the proposal has been resisted by
N-S has offered more for Conrail but the three companies have been unable to
hammer out the details.
The two Virginia railroads want to acquire Conrail because of its stronghold
in the Northeast.

Scientists reporting in the journal "Nature medicine" found that people who
gained an average of 50 pounds
over three years started out with lower leptin levels than did people who

The study adds hope that one day doctors can use leptin to help people

Iowa researchers have found a gene that can help in the early detection of
a form of glaucoma found in people under age 20.
The gene discovery may lead to better treatments for all glaucoma
Left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness-- so slowly and painlessly,
that you don't even notice it until your vision is gone.
Your eye is actually a hollow structure, filled with fluid. For some
unknown reason, people with glaucoma have too much fluid, and the pressure
from the fluid pinches the optic nerve in the back of the eye...over time,
permanently damages it.
Risk factors for glaucoma include age-- though most people don't develop
glaucoma until after age 60-- but some can develop it as early as 40.
Another risk factor is race.
