A jury has given a Lynchburg woman six months in jail for shooting her
daughter four times last summer.

26- year- old Tara Kim was shot in the head, chest, stomach and hip in an
argument with her mother at their Augusta Street home last July.
The jury spent nearly a full day finding 41- year- old Emma Jean Davis
guilty of unlawful wounding.
The verdict disappointed prosecutors who had pushed for the more serious
charge of malicious wounding.

Davis will be sentenced in March.
In a statement to police, Harold David Davis says he was outside the home of
68 year- old Jean Anderson while she was being murdered inside.
But a judge ruled there was enough evidence, including fingerprints and
D-N-A that Davis participated in the killing, and certified Davis' rape and
capital murder charges.
Anderson, a retired school teacher from Marion, was strangled to death with
One of Davis' former jailmates testified Davis admitted having sex with
Anderson, but claimed his co- defendant committed the murder.
17 year- old Joshua Widener's hearing is still under way this evening.
Officials say D-N-A tests link Widener to the rape.
Republican attorney general candidate Gil Davis had his say today on a two
year old videotape made during a Roanoke hotel room party with a client.
Davis greeted reporters 90 minutes after a Patrick County judge released him
from his attorney- client relationship with Ramona Hines.
The Pittsylvania County woman made a videotape public earlier this month on
which she, her husband, and Davis discuss her desire to pose for nude pictures.
Davis says the tape was made after a business meeting.

Davis challenged his three GOP primary opponents to sign a clean campaign
Ten people from Lynchburg's Ward Two are hoping to fill the seat of the late
Junius Haskins on city council.
Haskins died January 17th while on city business in Washington D.C.
Five p-m today was the deadline for applications to be filed.
Council now has until February 16th to appoint a replacement.
City officials say it's likely members will review the applications after
their formal work session next Tuesday, and make the appointment a few days
The chosen candidate will serve until May, 1998 when the seat comes up for
Last year's leading rusher for the Ferrum College Panthers, along with three
other players, have been charged with beating one of their teammates.
Maurice Clark, who's seen here running the ball, Al Anderson, David Cooper,

A convicted killer and high-level drug trafficker who once lived a
comfortable life under federal protection in Roanoke County has been relocated
by the federal government.
The feds promised the murder victim's family that Javier Cruz would appear
in court this month.
The federal drug case remains sealed, and Glenda Garrett doesn't believe
the 44-year old drug runner-turned government informant will ever serve time.

The pain of loosing her son is just as intense as the day it happened.
Nearly 10 years later she's still reviewing news accounts of the crime.
July 30, 1987, Mark Garrett's body was found on the southside of Charlotte
with a bullet near the back of his head.
Mrs. Garrett says Mark had bought a truck from the Columbian drug
trafficker, Javier Cruz, but that Cruz wouldn't give her son title to the

Cruz disappeared only to surface two years later on a dairy farm he bought
in Bent Mountain. He moved to Salem in the Summer of 1990.
It was a convenient mid-point for transporting cocaine up and down the East
Using the alias, Louis Florez, Cruz ran a used car lot in Roanoke,
specializing in pick-ups, station wagons, campers, trailers... anything that
could be used to conceal large amounts of cash and coke.
Soon after he got busted in Miami, Cruz agreed to become an informant.

Garrett is convinced the D-E-A got the murder charges reduced, so they
could get him back on the street working for them.

The feds adamantly deny the accusation.

In reality Cruz came back to the Roanoke Valley, bought a 288-thousand
dollar home in the Clearbrook area of the county, opened a nightclub, and

Mrs. Garrett REMAINED unimpressed even after officials from Washington flew
to Charlotte last month to try to convince her that the D-E-A had nothing to do
with reducing the murder charge.
They also outlined just how important Cruz has been in helping them reach
the highest levels of the Cali Cartel in Columbia.

The government relocated Cruz right after the story broke last Fall.
Federal authorities refuse to discuss the case ON the record, declining even an
invitation to discuss the merits of using informants in drug investigations.
U-S Attorney Bob Crouch says this an "active investigation."

The Roanoke Express lost two of its top players today - one to a trade and
another to a promotion.
Ilya Dubkov, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, will spend the next 3
or 4 games with the Edmonton Oilers American league affiliate, the Hamilton
Bulldogs in the AHL.
Bobby Brown has simply been traded to the Baton Rouge Kingfish for a player
to be named later.
Brown had 23 points in 39 games.
Roanoke is in Charlotte tonight.
Tyrone Robertson, one of the top high school athletes in the state of
Virginia has quit the George Washington, Danville basketball team.
The six-foot five inch 270 pound Robertson was averaging 11 points and nine
rebounds a game for the defending state champions, who are ranked 24th in the
nation by USA Today.
Robertson says hoops are no longer fun and that he needs to concentrate more
on his studies.
Robertson's college future is on the football field. He appears to have
narrowed his choices to Georgia and Virginia Tech.
The Virginia men's basketball team closes out a four game home stand
tomorrow afternoon against Florida State.
And Steve Mason says the Noon tipoff with the Seminoles marks the start of a
wicked stretch run to the tournament.
