You won't have to learn the lyrics to a new state song for at least another year.
A House of Delegates committee today tabled a proposal to replace "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" with "Virginia" as the official state song.
"Virginia" was written by country singer and sausage king Jimmy Dean and his wife Donna
Another bill approved by the Senate and sent to the House would make "Carry Me Back" state song emeritus and direct a study committee to come up with a new state song.
The current state song is rarely sung in public because of lyrics many consider racially offensive.
