Scores of controversial bills are living and dying in the final hours of the
1997 General Assembly's crossover day.
That's when each chamber trades bills.
Ellen Qualls is in our Richmond newsroom.
What are the highlights so far?
Jean, crossover day normally sees some of the most contentious issues that
have been put off before.
Among them today, a quick fix or a watering down, depending on your
viewpoint, of welfare reform in Virginia.

The bill was defeated on a 50-50 tie -- keeping workfare intact for now.
In other matters, both chambers have given preliminary or final approval to
a ban on same sex marriages.
And the Senate has given a preliminary nod to making physician assisted
suicide a criminal act.

It's being called the worst disaster in Israeli military history.

Two helicopters crashed in Northern Israel- in heavy fog and rain.
The Israeli army is reporting at least 70 soldiers have died.
Witnesses say the two transport choppers collided as they were flying toward

Meantime, the U-S Marine Corps says night vision goggles contributed to a
helicopter crash that killed a Vinton native last year.

Britt Stacey was one of 14 marines killed when two helicopters collided
during training exercises in May..
According to a Marine Corps report, a navigational error and problems with
night vision gear led to the crash.
The report says the crew aboard one helicopter lost site of the other

Industries in Arizona.
An ITT spokesperson says the company can't comment on military
A North Carolina man has been charged with killing his girlfriend, a
23-year old Roanoke woman.
Aquila Barnett was named in an 11-count indictment handed up today by a
federal grand jury in Charlotte.

It started when Robin William's apartment on Keswick Avenue was firebombed
Her hand and arm were burned.
She recovered, only to be gunned down in the street outside her mother's

Cowlings told jurors Nicole told him O-J Had hit her.

In other news-- Lynchburg's Habitat for Humanity chapter had to scale back
its plans for a major new subdivision featuring affordable housing.
Habitat was going to use a 750-thousand dollar grant to help build 108 new
homes on a plot of land off Florida Avenue.
But city zoners rejected the proposal as being too large.. so Habitat has
offered to drop 20 homes and make the extra space available for recreation
areas or a community center.

Devonette Turner has been hired through a grant from the Roanoke Valley
Health Care Foundation to counsel women on how to best care for their babies
and their bodies.
She's seen the awful affects of drugs-- and alcohol-- on children-- and so
much of it, can be undone simply through prenatal care and proper nourishment.
It all begins with genetic counseling and a special ultrasound-- that
measures exposure to harmful substances.

A warning today about home use hair coloring.
A new study finds certain dyes-- including the popular Grecian formula--
can pose a danger because they contain lead.
The dyes can leave lead traces on hands, hair, bathroom counters and hair
dryers-- and that can pose a threat to children.
Of five dyes tested, four had lead levels higher than household paint.
The F-D-A will review the data but maintains lead-containing dyes are safe
if used properly.
Most over-the-counter hair dyes are lead free.

Crayola Crayons is joining the retro crowd.
Today the Crayola Company introduced eight new crayons--where else but at
the Rainbow Room in New York City.
The coloring giant says the new colors are inspired by the 70's for a
healthy dose of that nostalgic period.
The shades are currently un-named...
They include the orange color found in shag carpets, avocado green found
in many kitchens in the 1970's, and the purple found in bell bottoms.
Names will be given to these shades by kids 12 years old and under.
The colors will commemorate people or heroes.
