Lynchburg school officials want to know..
Starting next fall they'll start looking at the criminal backgrounds of
prospective employees more closely.

Nine months of undercover work paid off for the Rockbridge Regional Drug
Monday, the task force arrested 27 people on drug charges.
Today they showed off the results of those arrests; cocaine, marijuana, and
several prescription drugs allegedly stolen by a worker at a Lexington nursing
Police Chief Bruce Beard who has been with the department for 27 years says
this is the biggest single drug roundup he's seen.
The Rockbridge task force has made a total of 299 arrests since it formed in
The verdict is in, but the work is far from over.
Lawyers in the O.J. Simpson civil suit are now hashing out differences over
who should testify in the next phase of the case.

((The defense failed. O.J. Simpson lost millions, but the team is fighting on.
The first new battle: determine how deeply into Simpson's finances the
plaintiffs may go during the next phase of the trial. This afternoon the judge
ruled the plaintiffs may present witnesses talking about possible future
earnings for Simpson.
Money is what the jury will be thinking about too, because the job now is to
figure-out how much more o.j. simpson should pay.
If the first award is any key, then the next figure could be huge.
The jury ordered Mr. Simpson to pay eight and a half million dollars, to
compensate the Goldman's for the loss of their son.
FRED GOLDMAN/VICTIM'S FATHER: JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE. THANK GOD.
The Brown family did not ask for compensatory damages.
But they will receive a punitive damage award, because the jury decided that
O.J. Simpson committed malice and oppression against her.
As for O.J. Simpson, it appears he spent the day in his home.

Last night's verdict in the O-J Simpson civil trial left some people
scratching their heads.

They say they don't understand how one jury can find Simpson not guilty, and
another find him responsible for the murders.
Washington and Lee Law Professor Jim (FEM-is-ter) Phemister wasn't surprised
by yesterday's verdict.
He says there was evidence to support it, just as there was evidence to
support a not-guilty verdict in the criminal trial.

taint the verdict.
When you hear about the national budget you don't often hear the word
But that's what the Clinton administration is talking about with it's
balanced budget proposal.
The budget for fiscal 1998 goes to Congress tomorrow-
No talk of deficit.
Instead, this budget claims to have enough savings to produce a 17
billion-dollar surplus by 2002.
Overall, the budget spends more than one and half trillion dollars.
If you own a cellular phone, and you think you're making private phone calls

The manager of a Radio Shack in Roanoke says many customers want to buy
scanners specifically for that purpose-- but the scanners on his shelf would
have to be electronically altered to pick up cell phone frequencies.

Three cars jumped the tracks- 15 people in all were hurt, but officials at
the scene say none of the injuries are serious.
West Virginia Police say they've had the right man all along.
Jacob Beard was convicted and sentenced to two life terms for the 19-80
murders of two Rainbow Family members.
But last fall white supremacist Joseph Franklin said HE shot and killed the
two women while on a cross-country murder spree.
After investigating Franklin's claims state police say they are sure Franklin
did not do it- and that his descriptions of the killings do not match evidence.
Nancy Santomero and Vicki Durian were murdered in Pocahontas County while
hitchhiking to a gathering of the Rainbow Family.
It was NO landslide, but the director of George Allen's most embattled
agency got final General Assembly approval today.
Tom Hopkins' seven month tenure at the Department of Environmental Quality
was re-affirmed with 65 votes.
34 lawmakers did NOT vote or pleaded a conflict.

((In a week's time, the senior has signed to play football at Virginia Tech
and signed off the basketball team.
In his absence, the Eagles have shown the character of true champions, coming
together to win 2 straight against Western District opponents. Teron Mcfadden,
