((The first incident happened Wednesday with a Nation's Air flight. Bound from Puerto Rico to New York's Kennedy International Airport.
But about 70 miles out, off the new jersey coast the pilot of
the boeing 727 realized he had company...two f-16 fighter jets like
these, from a nearby air national guard unit...

He says one of them flew so close..within 400 feet in fact that warning signs went blared in the cockpit of the commercial jetliner. Startled, the pilot threw the plane into a steep dive to avoid a collision throwing two flight attendants and a passenger to the floor.
Air national guard spokesman say the F-16 pilots were just trying to identify the plane flying in restricted air space- something they could have done by radar. COL. THOMAS GRIFFIN/AIR NATIONAL GUARD: THEY WERE NOT HOT DOGGING.
But then surprisingly, another incident. This one near the Maryland coast.
An American Eagle flight bound for Kennedy Airport and again more F-16's, four of them- one flying within about 2-thousand feet of the commuter flight.
