(( The general refrain at the General Assembly regarding Virginia's current state song is that "Carry Me Back to Old Virginia" should be shelved.
It's seldom sung in public because of lyrics many consider racially offensive.
But a viewer from Blue Ridge is still singing its praises.
"As a resident of Virginia, I do not want my state song `Carry Me Back to Olde (sic) Virginia' changed just because the Negro's (sic) are insulted because of the language. If people would get together and start a petition, maybe it will stop our song from being changed. Maybe I can't stop this from happening, but at least I'll have my say. The state song is my heritage and I will not have it stomped on.
This is 1997, not 1897. Grow up. The state song has the word `taters' in it. Is this like that Ebonics. You will never change history, and in my book `Carry Me Back to Olde Virginia' will never die."
