Roanoke County police say a man fatally shot his ex-girlfriend before
attempting to take his own life.
And if you're holding an American Airlines ticket for Saturday, keep your
eyes on Washington.
Some light to moderate snow showers are falling across the area, but they
will not last too long, and we are expecting no additional accumulation. We'll

Lakes says the sound of the gun firing and his girlfriend's scream will stay

Brooks is in Roanoke Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Investigators say the shooting is still under investigation and charges
against him are pending.
A Pittsylvania County man charged with killing his wife wants to hire his
34- year- old Timothy Wayne Abbott voiced his decision in court this
Abbott was arraigned for allegedly killing his wife outside the home they
shared in the Keeling community.
Authorities say Melissa Faye Holland Abbott was shot once in the chest
Saturday night and died at the scene.
Abbott is being held in the Pittsylvania County jail WITHOUT bond.
Sheriff's officials say they still have NOT determined a motive.
A domestic dispute late last night in Rockbridge County ended in a shooting.
Authorities say 29- year- old Harry Duff was shot several times.
Police are charging Carla Marie Statler with malicious wounding.
Duff is listed in very critical condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The incident happened at the home of Statler's mother.
A Carroll County woman is dead after police say she ran her car head on into
a tractor trailer.
State Police say Teresa Butler was driving south on U-S route 52 in the
north bound lane early this morning when she hit the truck.
Butler died at the scene and her eight- year- old child was airlifted to a
North Carolina hospital.
A contract dispute could ground the nation's largest domestic airline.
American Airlines and its pilots' union will take their differences before
federal mediators today.

half percent, the company is offering five. american says its pilots are

The other issue involves american's low cost commuter, american eagle. the
company wants to add jets to eagle's fleet. but the pilots worry eagle
would start flying expanded routes and take away their jobs.
It is clear a strike would hurt the airline much more than the
union. american would lose about 60 million dollars a day. that's enough to
wipe out all the company's annual profits in just one month.
With the start of round the clock negotiations, one union leader said the
chance of a strike is 50-50.

One of the convicted figures in the Whitewater scandal is hinting President
Clinton played a larger role than previously thought.
The New Yorker magazine is reporting that James McDougal is telling
Independent council Kenneth Starr that Mr. Clinton knew of an illegal loan made

That contradicts testimony made by McDougal and the President during

The stay in Fort Benning, Georgia is expected to last less than a week--
after that the guardsmen will travel to Germany before reaching their ultimate

The first female cadets at V-M-I won't be alone when they get to campus this
Female cadets from two other military colleges will live in the barracks to
help them fit in.
Superintendent Josiah Bunting told the V-M-I board of visitors Saturday that
four women from Texas A-and-M University and four from Norwich University will
become part of the corps of cadets in August.
Bunting says the goal is to provide the young female cadets with advisers
