The other issue involves american's low cost commuter, american eagle. the company wants to add jets to eagle's fleet. but the pilots worry eagle would start flying expanded routes and take away their jobs.
It is clear a strike would hurt the airline much more than the union. american would lose about 60 million dollars a day. that's enough to wipe out all the company's annual profits in just one month.
With the start of round the clock negotiations, one union leader said the chance of a strike is 50-50. CAPTAIN JIM PHILPOT/PILOT'S UNION: THERE IS ALWAYS AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION BUT IT IS CLEARLY IN THE COMPANY'S HANDS.

"As a resident of Virginia, I do not want my state song `Carry Me Back to Olde (sic) Virginia' changed just because the Negro's (sic) are insulted because of the language. If people would get together and start a petition, maybe it will stop our song from being changed. Maybe I can't stop this from happening, but at least I'll have my say.
