((During the 1960s and early 70s, WLLL was one of the most popular radio
stations in central Virginia.
In those days, the station was located right here, on a hill west of
Lynchburg. It had a powerful A-M signal that was on the air during daylight
hours only.
But for a number of years, beginning in 1970, the station beamed out a
clearer F-M signal around the clock.
If you wanted to hear rock 'n' roll after dark in Lynchburg, you tuned in
WLLL F-M, and Dan Marks.
((VOICE OF DAN MARKS/FORMER WLLL DISC JOCKEY: I NEVER DREAMED THAT F-M WOULD BE
SUCH A BIG COMMODITY. I MEAN, IT'S MONSTROUS.))
The 19-year old Pittsburgh native was fresh out of broadcasting school when
he took over the six-to-midnight shift at WLLL in 1970.
((DAN MARKS/FORMER WLLL DISC JOCKEY: EVERYBODY LISTENED TO WLLL BACK THEN.
BECAUSE THEY PLAYED ROCK 'N' ROLL.))
At WLLL, he won gold records for debuting songs that later became hits.
Yet he sometimes had to fight to keep the station rocking.
((DAN MARKS: WE HAD A STATION MANAGER THAT DIDN'T LIKE "LAYLA." DEREK AND THE
DOMINOS BACK THEN, YOU KNOW, THE MONSTROUS HIT RECORD. I PLAYED IT ANYWAY. I
MEAN, I WAS ALWAYS BEING CALLED IN, SAYING "MARKS, DON'T PLAY LAYLA!" BUT I
WOULD CONTINUE TO PLAY IT. I MEAN, ALMOST TO THE POINT OF ALMOST LOSING MY JOB
A COUPLE OF TIMES.))
The boss probably went off again when Marks impersonated a military officer,
called a McDonald's, and ordered 10-thousand burgers to go.
((DAN MARKS: I THINK THAT'S WHY PEOPLE LIKED ME AT THE TIME, BECAUSE I WAS
DIFFERENT. I DIDN'T JUST SIT THERE LIKE A BUMP ON A LOG AND PLAY MUSIC.))
Today there's a new WLLL on the air, playing gospel music.
Marks is now a freelance deejay, but he's also back on the F-M airwaves,
playing oldies on the weekends at WRDJ/WLDJ.
He's finding a new audience with the songs that once got him into trouble.
((DAN MARKS: I DID A PARTY LAST SUMMER. SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADERS. WHAT DID
THEY WANT TO HEAR? THE BEATLES. THE ROLLING STONES. ALL THAT STUFF. PEOPLE LOVE
IT. IT'S SOMETHING THAT'LL NEVER DIE.))
