((Local broadcasters tell us Roanoke's first female disc jockey was Chris Shannon at WBLU in 1969.
She had loyal listeners, but she also received hate mail from people who thought talking on the radio was a man's job.
Chris Shannon died of cancer while still in her 20s.
Female deejay number two arrived at WROV in 1976. By then, things were starting to change. ((LINDA SILVER/FORMER WROV DISC JOCKEY: SOME PEOPLE DIDN'T DEAL WITH IT VERY WELL. MOST PEOPLE DEALT WITH IT JUST FINE. BECAUSE I HAD TO WORK TWICE AS HARD AS THE OTHER GUYS DID. AND I DID. BECAUSE I WANTED IT SO MUCH.))
At WROV, where the staff included Bart Prater and Rob O'Brady, she found what she wanted. ((LINDA SILVER: I WAS JUST SO HAPPY TO BE THERE, DOING WHAT I WAS DOING. I DIDN'T CARE. IT WAS SUCH A RUSH. I HAD SUCH A GREAT TIME.))
As with most deejays, Linda enjoyed creating a personality in the minds of her listeners. But radio's anonymity has its down side. ((LINDA SILVER: WHEN I WOULD MEET PEOPLE THEY WOULD SAY "OH, MY GOD, I WOULD THINK THAT YOU WERE TALL AND YOU WERE BLOND, AND YOU WERE THIS, AND YOU WERE THAT," AND IT'S LIKE "SORRY, I'LL GO HIDE IN MY CONTROL ROOM NOW. AND CREATE THE ILLUSION."))
Today, Linda is Music Director at WDBZ F-M in New York City. Say goodby to another illusion; SHE's the one who controls what the deejays play. ((LINDA SILVER: SOME PEOPLE ARE STILL UNDER THE FANTASY THAT DISC JOCKEYS JUST SIT IN A ROOM AND DECIDE "I'M GOING TO PLAY THIS OR I'M GOING TO PLAY THAT." AND UNFORTUNATELY, IT'S MUCH MORE SCIENTIFIC NOW. WE DO A LOT OF RESEARCH, AND IT'S ALL DONE FOR THEM. THEY HAVE A LITTLE MUSIC LOG, THAT AT MY STATION I PRODUCE, AND THEY HAVE NO CHOICE.))
As for the future, Linda says she'd eventually like to move to another previously all-male part of a radio station: the Station Manager's office.
