A tough commute for motorists, and no school for many students as a winter
storm leaves behind ice and snow.
And on this President's day weekend some folks leave for vacation, but may
be stranded if pilots with American Airlines strike.

This latest winter blast dumped as many as four inches on parts of Central
and Southwestern Virginia... making early morning travel treacherous.
Authorities in the Roanoke Valley reported only minor accidents.
This was the result of one of them.
Apparently a vehicle smashed into this route sign... and officials were
forced to tear it down.
But it was obvious from the beginning that the snow crews were ready for

The winter storm claimed one life last night.
Police say Alan Dale Hall was driving through Patrick County when he ran off
His car struck an embankment and overturned.
He was trapped inside for about 30 minutes as rescue workers tried to free
Hall was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
In less than 12 hours American Airlines pilots plan to stop flying.
The pilots union and the airline are holding marathon talks in hopes of
averting a strike.
The sticking points: salary increases and the airline's plans to give more
routes to lower paid pilots.
Meanwhile, President Clinton is urging reconciliation.

The Senate committee also defeated a bill requiring that doctors give women
more information about the procedure before performing an abortion.
A judge is expected to rule today whether autopsy results in the JonBenet
Ramsey case will be made public.
Authorities in Boulder, Colorado have asked a judge to seal the results to

A 350-million dollar upgrade to the hubble space telescope is underway.
Early this morning astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith began the first of a
series of spacewalks to be completed over a four day period.
An infrared camera and an improved spectrometer will increase hubble's
visual and computing power.
American Electric Power can still apply for a high- powered voltage line
from West Virginia to Botetourt County.
The State Corporation Commission denied a request to stop it yesterday.
Project opponents in Giles, Craig and Roanoke counties filed a motion to

The president of the Greenbrier is betting the West Virginia legislature
will approve gambling at his resort this year.
