That's the fight brewing in Roanoke County. The problem- the land is
privately owned and can be sold.
But the woman who lives on the land is fighting. She wants to save the
Virginia Wildlife Rescue.
Cockpit voice recorders are released from that F-16 jet that flew too close
to a commercial plane.

The Roanoke Wildlife Rescue Agency shelters and rehabilitates injured
wildlife, and then releases the animals to the wild--
But if a last ditch fundraising attempt doesn't succeed, the animals, and
the agency will be without a place to go.

(( Dorothy Runion and her volunteer staff operate out of a house owned by
Runion's 97 year old Grandmother.
But the agency may have to move, or shut down altogether because the house,
and the 23 acres used by the non-profit agency are set to be sold to Strauss
Construction for residential development.
Dorothy Runion's father has power of attorney for his mother and he wants to
go through with the sale.
He is Frank Helvestine-- the same man who has been charged with first degree
murder in a 20 year old bombing case.

Although Runion has used a civil suit to delay the sale for the past year,
the case is set to be heard next month.
Both veterinarians and animal control officials say the the agency performs
a vital service to the community.

raise 1 hundred and 50 thousand dollars to make a counter offer on the
property. But they fear they may already be too late.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused an explosion that killed
one man and severely injured another this morning in Campbell County.
Authorities say two workers at W-E-L Incorporated in Concord were
dismantling an old underground fuel tank when one end of the tank exploded.

he allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend ten days ago.
Brooks was charged with first-degree murder yesterday- -the same day he was

Drucilla Barker says the work place is segregated by gender and the lower
paying jobs are historically held by women.
For example 99-percent of dental hygienists are female, while 80-percent of

But there's a sizeable hitch... only a quarter of the state money is
That means Botetourt County could end up paying much more for the bridge.
There's another catch.
If the board decides to accept this current proposal, the county would be
forced to fund repairs to this bridge in Iron Gate. This bridge only serves one
Botetourt County family and about a half dozen in Alleghany County. The cost of
this project alone is estimated between two and three million dollars.

Eagle Rock residents believe their bridge is worth saving at any cost.
They point to the dangers of Route 43... which would represent the only way
in and out of the town if the bridge was lost.
Many are afraid to drive on the road because of the frequency of rock

from the Board of Supervisors.
But they will get an answer soon.
The board must vote on the state proposal by March 21st.
