A racial incident at the high school resulted in suspensions...
The punishment at George Wythe High School is generating more controversy
in the community.
The parents of at least four white students are now asking the school board
to overturn the punishment.
Ten students were reportedly suspended for tying their jacket drawstrings
But black parents contend the suspensions are too lenient.
Earlier this week, members of the group, Concerned Citizens Network,
complained that black students have been subjected to repeated slurs and other
The school board is expected to consider a request to overturn the
suspensions at its meeting next month.
Two Ferrum College football players have been sidelined both by the school
and the judicial system.
This afternoon, 19- year- old Al Anderson and 19- year- old David Cooper
were convicted of assaulting one of their teammates last month.
Both have been kicked out of school and will serve three days in the
Franklin County Jail.
The incident happened during a pickup basketball game at the school's
Linebacker Wes Mattera said he was badly beaten after his team won the game.
