Lawmakers have given up for the evening... after the House of Delegates
offered the Senate a phone book to find any new candidates for the job.
The appointment is a big deal, because it's soaked in politics.

Richmond Judge Margaret Spencer emerged today with 55 votes in the House of
Delegates.
She's the only candidate with high profile backing -- that of Lieutenant
Governor Don Beyer.
But SENATE Republicans, are in effect, blocking what would be the first
African American woman jurist on the high court.
A justice needs 21 votes.
Spencer got 20.
Former Republican Delegate Steve Agee of Salem also got 20.

Graybeal in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in the New River Valley.
The General Assembly picks must be certified by the Governor.

An elementary school student is the latest Wythe County student facing
suspension as the result of a racially motivated incident.
Officials confirmed a white student at Scott Memorial Elementary School was
suspended for tying his jacket drawstring into a knot which resembled a noose.
The same type of incident happened one day earlier at George Wythe High
School.
Some black students were outraged over that behavior and several two-day
suspensions were levied against white students.
Then the problem seemed to intensify yesterday, when a hate message was
spray painted on the road leading up to the High School.
But NEWS-7 spoke to several white students this afternoon, they said the
racism problem is being blown out of proportion.

The man accused of robbing a Roanoke man and then leading a chase into
Botetourt County has been convicted of reckless driving.
Today, two more serious charges were certified to the grand jury.

Timothy Lam was arrested in Botetourt County on February first, but the
incident allegedly began in Roanoke with the robbery of 50 dollars.
Police say, as Lam tried to escape, the victim was thrown from the back of
Lam's pick-up.
And later, they say he rammed a car that followed him into Botetourt
County.

attempted malicious wounding.

O-J Simpson is considered the cause of increased sales of Bruno Magli
(MAH'-lee) shoes.
Bruno Magli's president says the fame generated by Simpson's two trials has
proven both good and bad.
The shoes were in the spotlight after Simpson denied wearing them, only to
be confronted with a series of photos contradicting his testimony.
The company says sales were up 35 percent last year and 50 percent already
this year.
But Bruno Magli executives say there is a downside-- fearing the shoes
may be forever known as "O.J.'s shoes."
