A man opened fire on the observation deck of New York's Empire State
Building late this afternoon.
One person was killed and six others were wounded.
The gunman shot himself in the head, but survived.
Witnesses say dozens of tourists made a mad dash to the stairway and
elevator exits.
Seven people were injured after the shooting, including some who were
trampled.
Emergency officials say one victim died at a hospital, and that
one of the shooting victims was a child.

The Commonwealth's attorney today agreed to drop the charges against Robert
Wayne Hickson.
Rebecca Lee Hicks showed up at a friend's house this morning and told police
she was never kidnapped.

ex-boyfriend during a fight in Roanoke Thursday night.
It was the same fight that led to the abduction charges.

The Roanoke County police are investigating their second homicide of the
month.
Police say 56-year-old Paskel Tinsley Junior allegedly shot 37-year-old Rick
Knobel(KA-nobel) during an early morning argument.
The shooting happened around four this morning in Tinsley's Bent Mountain
home.
Knobel died at the scene.
Tinsley's wife was home at the time of the incident, but police say she was
sleeping.
Tinsley is in the Roanoke County Jail without bond.
He is charged with first degree murder.

aide Vincent Foster.

crime.

a 34- percent drop in its first quarter earnings.
The company told shareholders at its annual meeting that an improving market
for its products and greater productivity will help the company's bottom line
going forward.
The College of Health Sciences will have a new home after the turn of the
century.
American Electric Power has given the Roanoke school the deed to 38 acres of
land just west of Dixie Caverns.
For the second time since last summer, stock of Optical Cable in Roanoke
County has shot up in price.
At one point this week it was trading at 14 times its average daily volume.
And Shenandoah Life Insurance of Roanoke posted some strong profits for
1996.
The company raked in 11- point- three- million- dollars for the year, an
increase of 27- percent.
It was a rough week for the financial markets, the Dow Jones Industrial
Average took a 57 point hit, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 33 points.

Jeff Gordon won his second straight Winston Cup race today taking the
checkered flag in the Goodwrench Service 400 at the North Carolina Motor
Speedway.

Dale Jarrett had the strongest car on the track early in the race he passed
Mark Martin to take his second lead of the race and he was leading after 100
laps.
South Boston's Jeff Burton was having a good run he had the Exide Batteries
Ford in fifth place after passing Ricky Craven.
Dale Earnhardt started 27-th and he got caught up in traffic this time
with a group that included Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace Earnhardt was 11-th.
How strong was Jarrett's car well after 180 laps he blew past pole sitter
Mark Martin putting Martin a lap down and he was the leader at the halfway
point.
Then with 163 laps to go Dick Trickle spins out and slides on the track
bringing out the third caution of the day.
After challenging Jarrett several times in the race Gordon finally made a
move and took the lead with 42 laps to go and held off Jarrett winning his
second race of the season.

the Mississippi Seawolves.
The Express led 3 to 1 after two periods and Roanoke pulls out the 3 to 1
win.
Roanoke returns to the Roundhouse Tuesday night for a game against the
Hampton Roads Admirals.

Jeff Sluman broke a nine year drought on the P-G-A tour this afternoon
winning the Tucson Chrysler Classic.
